Problem getting my computer to start up

Ok, I hope this is the proper forum to post this in, but my wife went using the computer last night and it froze up. It would not shut off or do anything so eventually she was forced to unplug it.

This morning we went to turn it back on and when it is turning on it allows us to select a mode for Windows: Start normally, safe mode etc. When we try to srart it it does a couple of things then it goes right back to the select a mode for windows again. It just keeps going in a circle. I tried a couple of different options of which modes to start it in but it does the same thnig.

The computer is a Compaq Presario Model 4420ca and is running Windows XP Edition. Any suggestions, are greatly appreciated. -Brent

does it go in the reboot loop even when you try to enter into safe mode?

Yes, It does the loop in safe mode as well.

This is a download of an .iso file of just the Recovery Console for XP.
Burn to CD with Nero or other 'disc image' capable tool and boot.

XP Recovery Console.

Then see if this helps:

You could also use the Recovery console to run a fixboot command.
