I'm trying to trouble shoot my sisters PC. The PC with XP will restart right after the desktop will show up.

The event viewer shows an error and a restart and gives the minidump location.

So i tried following the guide to read the minidump that is on these forums.

However, when I try to install the MS debugging program in safe mode it wont let me because "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

I can't find any policies that won;t allow the install but i can;t find anything.

I'm currently running memtest86+ on the system but i really have no cue whats going on....:cry any ideas guys?

    1. I think you should run some extra anti-malware scannings to start with. You can get in safe mode, you wrote. Then perhaps the machine wont shut down all the time. Run these from safe mode:

    Safe mode: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us
    MBAM: http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html
    SAS: http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html

    2. Also these Microsoft based methods can repair and/or replace missing/damaged files:

    System Restore: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
    chkdsk: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us
    scannow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747/en-us
Windows Live OneCare Safty Scanner - free online: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
    Last Known Good Configuration: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852/en-us
    Repair Install: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

    3. What security programs have you installed? Sometimes incompatibility between various security programs can cause this.

    System is running AVG 8.5

I ran AVG from safe mode twice and it found nothing.

I'll check out those other programs you posted. thanks

No firewall? Just the build-in Windows?

    Hi

What is the error thats mentioned in Event Viewer as it can hold clues as to the cause, but going on what you mention about getting into safe mode ok, the cause could be a startup (could be malware) or a faulting driver.

If the error is a bluescreen BSOD, then force windows to hold on the error so that you can get the code, open windows in safe mode and right click my computer > properties > advanced tab > click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section > and untick Automatically Restart then reboot into normal mode and write down the full BSOD message if you get one.

*re-tick the Automatically Restart box to re-enable.

To check if its a startup causing this, then in Safe Mode again, click Start > Run > msconfig and in the Startup tab untick all and then reboot to see if you can get into normal mode without a reboot.
