I just purchased a new computer and i have been trying to install a OS on it, but the OS is not taking as it were.

I have tried to install windows 03 server Enterprise Edition, windows 03 server standard edition, and xp pro.

I obtained these from my school and burned the image to a disk.

i first thought it might be the burning software i was using so i changed that. Then i thought it my be the new cd drive.

So far i have tried 7 different OS disks and i know that at least one of them works correctly, 3 cd drives, and three different hard drives.

I have tried to do the same install several times only changing little things but no luck.

I am going to try to take out the bios battery later.

Now the interesting part, when i install the OS it takes me to the blue install screen and then i can get to the install screen where i enter the serial key, but once that finishes the computer restarts and takes me to the screen where i enter the serial key. i have tried putting the key in again and again, but it doesn't want to work.

I have installed xp pro on several different computers several different times, and i have never had this problem, i would say i have installed it successfully over 20 times and the windows server at least 3 times successfully. thank you

"I just purchased a new computer" .....new? Used? It would seem to be the puter ....where did you get it and what is it?

the computer was bought new, as a bare bones system. I have a 120 gig hard drive that i am using.

the system specs are as follows:

    Abit SG-80DC Socket 775 Barebone Kit / Intel Pentium D 840 OEM / 16x DL DVDRW / 512MB DDR PC3200 / CPU Fan / ATX MId-Tower Case with 400 Watt Power Supply (A458-1142 F)

so it should work all quite well.

Have you tried the original xp disc? Not the burned copy?

Was it a cd that was proprietary ....as in for a specific computer brand?
As in if it came with a dell (gateway ...etc.) it may not work on a non-dell computer.

kinda it's from a brand, but it gave me no trouble trying to install the OS. I think i know what your thinking and that doesn't seem to be the problem. this gave me the same problem as the other OS discs

Not sure if you're having the same problem as I had while installing WinXP recently on a newly built computer, but it sounds similar enough that it's worth mentioning at least.

What kind of keyboard are you using during these install attempts? If it's USB I suggest you unhook it and hook up a PS/2 keyboard instead. For some reason when I attempted to install WinXP Home on my newly built system it would get through the text part of the installation fine, but as soon as the message "Setup is starting Windows" appeared the screen went black and the computer abruptly rebooted and then....the install routine started all over from the beginning again, running off the CD drive.

I think this USB related problem doesn't occur on all systems and haven't been able to find a clear explanation of exactly why it happens but I know for a fact that as soon as I swapped my USB keyboard for a PS/2 keyboard my WinXP Home install ran without a hitch. This in spite of the fact that when I used the USB keyboard to make changes in the BIOS, run Lifeguard Data utilities and paritioning utilities before installing Windows, the USB keyboard worked fine. But when I tried (lots of times over several days!) to install Win XP with the USB keyboard the computer just kept rebooting until I replaced the USB keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard. Then, sha-zaam, everything was hunky dory.

Hope this is your problem and you have ready access to a PS/2 keyboard.

I'm using a PS/2 mouse and keyboard for this. and using a fresh bios by removing the power and the battery didn't help either.

No this is not illegal, my college is working with the microsoft acedemic alliance or MSDNAA Software Center. Besideds if your not going to try to help whats the point in posting. Even though it is funny to see that you are ignorant and closed minded, please if you post next time actually post something useful, gos_raf. Thank you.

The hard drive ....was that also new? Did it come with a setup utility? What kind is it?

I may be ignorant. I'm not to sure about it and I'm not interested in getting into any type of argument with you. However it is usually the ignorant who react so defensively when somebody says something that they perceive as threatening. You see I in no way threatened you all I said was "Dude, that's illegal." and you immediately saw that as a threat and lashed out.
Now I admit that my post did not in fact help you. However you never furnished any details relating to any "Microsoft College Project" that lets you copy Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server etc. Now here is where I have to admit my ignorance because I have never hear of such a project (although I'm not saying that it doesn't exist it probably does I just never heard
of it). However a simple explanation would have been sufficient and I would have probably answered "Oops sorry dude my bad". BESIDES you have no way to judge me that I am closed minded from the three words I wrote. Now please read this post again before you post any angry reply as I in no way intended to insult you and you would only display ignorance and close mindedness by assuming things about me you don't know.
Hope you can resolve your problem.

I am close to buying windows professional OS and business office from my college, for my course.
I would be most interested in the outcome of this thread.
