    Hallo

I would like to thank all of you who have helped me so far after being hacked. I now have my laptop up and running with a fresh installation of vista - all thanks to your help and advice.

I am trying to install a new Linksys router - wireless G broadband router WRT54GL-EU Version 1.1 I get as far as step 7 and the software either stops responding or begins looping and asking for my pasword. I tried copying the software to my hard drive, but the same thing happens. I have a vsat connection and have entered my new ip, gateway, dns etc under networking, and double checked that it is correct. I am currently connected through a D- link switch. I am using an Idirect modem 3000 series and have had no problem with my new connection. I have cleaned the installation CD. I cannot get any help from my ISP or the net.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would try to set it up without the software and go to like http://192.168.1.1 and try to login with the default username and password.

Is is ldirect or idirect? Are you sure the 3000 is just a modem and not a router too?

    Hi,

I have an idirect 3000 series satellite router. When I asked my isp to change my ip address, they suggested I get a linksys router for added security.

default login information for linksys router:

default IP address (type this into browser address bar): 192.168.1.1
    default admin username: admin
    default password: <blank>

This should take you to a web page on the router that will allow you to configure it without the software.

collinsl, unless the idirect router uses the same IP! With all the possible IPs that can be used, I was trying to help someone whose dsl modem and router used the same IP. She could never get into the router setup because of this. You can change IPs of devices but then it starts to get too complicated for some.
tadpole, I'm surprised that your ISP would recommend putting a router with a router already in use. Generally when this is done, you need to change one of the pieces of hardware to bridge mode. Two routers can cause you to have no internet access. When you put something in bridge mode, it is no longer a router. (I had to do this with a Verizon supplied modem and a linksys wired router).
I think you'd be better off using the idirect with the d-link switch you've been using and return the Linksys router.
Before returning it, wait to say what others have to say about a modem/router connected to another router.

Software is not needed to set up the router. It is just Plug in, set up the settings in the router for your ISP, and on you go.

    Hi

Thanks for the help and advice - It turns out the youngster at my isp gave me incorrect information. The ip, gateway and DNS were supposed to be entered for the router and not my LAN card. I got hold of the owner of my isp when nothing worked. Plodr, I will keep your advice in mind about the two routers.

    Thanks to you all :)
