hi, i have windows XP, and i was trying to install SP1and when it was getting ready to install it said "the file C/windows/system32\dllcache\softkbd.dll is open or in use by another aplication. Close all other aplications and click retry" so i close all other apps and it still doesnt work. any ideas on what i can do? thanks in a advance

Reboot and as soon as XP loads then install SP1.

if that message still exists, hit CTRL ALT DEL and find softkybd.exe, highlight it and end process.

i tried that still no luck, i ran SP right when windows started and still same message. and i also checked my running processes and softkbd.dll wasnt there

it's not a system file, so you could rename it to something like SOFTKBD.DL_ then reboot and try the install again.

I wonder Kodo if Safe Mode doesnt work, this file could be within system restore even re-naming it may result in its being reinstalled... so disabling system restore > reboot > look for the file again re-name > then retry SP1 may do the trick.

Since that file is in dllcache Windows sees it as a protected system file and will replace it when you try to rename it.

    Try this:

    1. Uninstall SoftKBD
    2. Run sfc /purgecache from a command prompt
    3. Install SP1

If that worked then reinstall SoftKBD

    Hi hyepride213 :)
There is some very good advice above. Sometimes it may be best to load files which are large like sp1 by disabling everything at start up. One way to do this is to go to START THEN CLICK ON RUN and type in MSCONFIG then tick the box START UP and then tick DISABLE ALL. Then reboot the computer and try again to install the sp1 service pack

I would still try installing it in Safe mode.

rename the file in Safe Mode, then try to install it.

Do a chkdsk /f on the drive if that doesn't help.
