    I'm having a problem playing CDs on my desktop PC.

    When I put CDs into the PC's CD player, CDs no longer autoplay.

    My PC's operating system is: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.

    Thanks

    Open My Computer and right click the icon for your CD player. Select Properties from the menu. In the box that pops up, click the Autoplay tab.
    Select what is on the CD and from the box below, select what program you want to use when such a CD is inserted.

    Hi plodr

    Thanks for responding to my request for help.

    I've carried out the steps you described. This hasn't solved my problem.

    Have you any more suggestions?

    Thanks

    Greetings, mark59.

    You might try this Microsoft Fix it for enabling Autorun - run the fix it, reboot, and see if your symptoms have changed.

    If not: are there any flags showing in Device Manager? Does the optical drive work well in operations other than Autorun?

    Hi Caliban

    I ran the Microsoft fix it, for which you provided the link. Unfortunately, the problem persists. I've looked at the CD-ROM in Device Manager: there's no yellow question mark or red exclamation mark against it.

    The device works fine other than Autorun.

    Ok, try this:

    Click Start > Run, enter "services.msc" (sans quotes). Scroll down to Shell Hardware Detection and make sure this service is started and set to Automatic.

    Also, if the Shell Hardware Detection service is up and running, open Registry Editor (click Start > Run, enter "regedit") and check the following keys:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
    "AutoRun"=dword:0000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "allocatecdroms"="0"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091

    Hi Caliban

    Thanks for getting back to me.

    I ran “services.msc” and Shell Hardware Detection was started and set to Automatic.

    So, I checked the registry entries. Now, I don’t know if this is different but under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom] “Autorun” dword = 0.00000001 (1)

    Under the registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] “allocatecdroms” = “0”.

    Under the registry key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] “NoDriveTypeAutoRun” = dword: 0x00000143 (323)

    I presume I need to edit some of these registry keys. I’m not 100% sure of how to do that.

    Thanks

    Good morning.

    Nothing to lose by editing that last dword.

    In the right pane, right-click on 'NoDriveTypeAutoRun' and select 'Modify'. In the edit box that appears, change the 'Value Data' to '91' (base should be 'Hexadecimal'). Ok out and reboot, see if your symptoms change.

    Hi Caliban

    Solved the problem. now. I've bought a new computer. That might seem a bit drastic but my other one was old and the list of its problems was growing per diem.

    Thanks for your help.

    Well, that's certainly one sure way of solving your problem. ;)

    Good luck with the new machine. In your spare time, if you decide to try to fix the old one, we'll be here.
