problem reinstalling dotnetfx on win xp

Where to stert...
...ok I recently uninstalled microsoft vbasic from my pc. I was a little overzealous *ahem* and rather stupidly uninstalled dotnet framework. I have tried repeatedly to reinstall dotnet framework but to no avail. The setup program gets as far registering system.enterpriseservices.dll and at that point it says excution failed, rolls back all the things it's done and a message pops up saying that the installation was prematurely ended, adding helpfully that I should contact microsoft product support if the problem persists.

My os is win xp sp.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions anyone might have on how to overcome this, or if you need more information to help please speak up.

Love the site btw, have downloaded heaps from here and found the answers to plenty of issues I've had, but this time I've not seen anything specific to my problem...unless I missed it

 

just realized that I didn't put the "2" on the end of sp2. And then also realized I don't know how to edit my post...duh!
