A friend said he thought he might have some malware, so I followed the instructions on MajorGeek’s READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide and Vista & Windows 7,8,10 Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure, and everything went fine, and there appeared to be nothing more than a little adware, but as advised, I did nothing to quarantine, remove, delete or repair any malware, I just generated logs.

I thought I’d send all the logs in together, but I was unable to obtain the last one, for MGtools.

When I ran it, it kept repeatedly asking if I would allow each step. And it asked so many times that I had to abort; there was just no way to get through it all.

He’s running Windows 10, so there was no need to disable UAC, and I had disabled his security software (Malwarebytes and Windows Defender), but to no avail.

And yes, I was running MGtools from the root at C:.

I had never had this problem on the few occasions that I had gone through this whole process on my own computer.

    What am I doing wrong?

Did you right click it and run as Admin?

Yes, I did, as instructed for all the scanning programs. And I did that despite the fact that the single user account on his machine has Administrator privileges, anyway.

When it is problematic on a Win10 system, I have them run these instructions:

Please download the latest version of FRST the below link.
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: Make sure you download the proper version ( 32 bit or 64 bit ) for your PC. Only one will run, the correct one. So it you make a mistake and download the wrong one, go back and get the other.
    • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your next reply.
    • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Thanks Tim, I downloaded it, and I'll take it to him and run it as instructed, and then submit all logs, including the one for FRST.

    Hi, Tim —

OK, I don’t know what went wrong the first time, but I tried again to run MGtools, and this time it worked fine.

But since I downloaded FRST, I ran that, too.

So here are ALL the logs.

What was the anomalous behavior my friend was seeing?

I think at first he encountered a malicious website, and that problem has not resurfaced. I told him to upgrade the free version of Malwarebytes I installed on his PC to the Premium version, so that should fix that.

But in the past couple days he’s been seeing an error message that says “rpsystray has stopped working.” Apparently this has something to do with RealPlayer.

I’m not sure what other odd things he’s been seeing, if any.

Anyway, here are the logs, if you’d care to look them over.

    Thanks.

All your logs are clean. I suggest that any issues be addressed in the software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8 or 10, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now go to the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 or 10 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
