I had no idea what NVIDIA was, and my stepdad put it on my Sony VAIO because he was using my computer and he wanted the smart-dimmer battery feature.

All I knew about NVIDIA was that every time I turned my computer on and it wasn't plugged in, I would have to adjust the brightness of the screen. I thought this was stupid so I just uninstalled it. Come restarting my computer, I see now that the desktop display has shrunk...there is a giant black border around it. When I scroll up and down windows, the screen kind of shakes and it's really slow.

Does anyone know why this happened or how I can fix it?! I know this is probably very vague...I'm sorry.

Greetings and Welcome to MajorGeeks! Hopefully, one of us, can help ye in your situation!

Sounds like ye need to install a video driver.

What laptop/VAIO are ye using? Model and make?

If the PC came with a driver disk, then I'd re-install the video drivers.

It's a VGN-S460. I never got any recovery disks or anything with it (I read online that Sony was really obnoxious and hardly sent out any with their VAIOs). It recently was really messed up and I took it to a computer repair place, where they reinstalled Windows XP, and then I didn't have anything on it to play dvds (really, really annoying since it is posted online how to make recovery disks in the event that one is reinstalling Windows XP). So they put a decoder thing on it so I could play dvds.

Then it was fine, and then my stupid stepdad put NVIDIA on it, and now that it's off, everything is screwed up. :( I would take it back to the repair place, but I have finals week after next, and it usually takes them at LEAST a few days to fix it, and I need it for papers and such.

Is there any kind of free software/drivers I can try downloading to remedy the problem? Though that is another part of my concern... I got rid of NVIDIA because it was a useless thing taking up space, and now its removal will force me to get another practically useless thing to fix what it messed up.

I wish I knew more about computers.
