I've got a PS fan whinning bad on my Sony Vaio PCV-RZ22G (1.5yr old). I figure I've got 3 options:
    1) buy new one from Sony for $130
    2) make DIY brackets to mount universal PS (don't know if cabling is proprietary also tho).
    3) drill rivets / cut open the housing to even get to the damn fan, then try to remove it and oil it (I have instructions on oiling a "normal" fan but this one might be rivited too and not removable.)

Since I have nothing to loose, which one would be my best bet?

I didn't know Vaio's were stocked full of proprietary (very insultingly over-priced) parts or I would not have bought one. And go figure it goes out 5 mos. after warranty expired!

Thanks for suggestions. BTW if anyone has a good one to sell...let me know.

Sony has always been and probably always will be full of proprietary hardware/software.

I suggest paying the $130 for Sony's part. If you do something else that may be drastic like drilling or something, there may be no turning back if it does not work. So $130, or another $2000 to $3000 dollars?

    Good luck.

Open up the PSU and replace the fan, if possible. Otherwise, buy the Sony replacement PSU.
