problem viewing photos. help???

well here's my issue.... I'm on my mom's laptop and I download pictures and attempt to open it with different viewers but it's not letting me whatsoever. The basic one is the picture and fax viewer on windows. It'll just say no picture available. it won't even show pictures on my yahoo messenger so I don't know. it'll show videos just fine. I've never encountered this issue so help plz. lol

 

Running Windows XP?

1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\shimgvw.dll, and then click OK.
3. When you receive a message that resembles the following, click OK:
DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\System32\shimgvw.dll succeeded.
4. Close Windows Explorer, and then try to view the picture again.

well my g/f just sent me a .png file and it worked, so I don't know if it's just jpg and jpeg files or not.
