Problem when I insert disc...

Up until recently, whenever I insert a disc into my laptop (running Vista Home Premium), I'd get a window giving my choices as to how I wanted to play it. Now, I insert a disc, but there's no window. (I have my settings set to "Ask me every time" how to play a disc when I insert one.)

Anyone know how I can get the window back?

Run regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Services>Cdrom>
make sure that autorun is set to 1.

    Also try this
    1. Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows + "e" key.
    2. Right-click the desired CD-ROM and select Properties from the enu.
    3. Select the AutoPlay tab.
    4. Select each item from the pulldown list and for the Action to perform, select "Take no action" to disable autorun, or pick the appropriate action to take if enabling autorun.
    5. Select OK.

    Hi, plodr. Thanks for responding.

I made sure that that registry key was set to 1 (it was). Then when I got to #3 in your instructions I found that I don't have an AutoPlay tab in Properties. I went to AutoPlay via my Control Panel. "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" was checked. All actions are set, as they always have been, to "Ask me every time." I tried unchecking "use AutoPlay," saving, then checking it again, and saving. No help.

Is there anything else I can try?

    Hi

Vista's autoplay is now controlled as you now found out in the Control Panel and is not a tab in drives properties, so dont worry about having to see autoplay tabs as that is for ≤ XP

Also as you have Vista Home Premium, click start and in the start search box type gpedit.msc
    then locate the following,

Click Computer Configuration > Windows Components > Autoplay Policies and in the right window you will see three options, make sure all three are set to Not Configured.

Do the same at this location

Click User Configuration > Windows Components > Autoplay Policies and again make sure all are set to Not Configured

Next option is editing the registry, so if above dont work I will post the keys to edit once you have replies to the above as small steps are normally needed to fix these issues, over going all out and adjusting too many settings.

    Hi, Halo.

First, as an aside, something curious occurred. In the email alerting me that you'd responded, the text of your response differed from that which appears here in the forum. In place of the first sentence in your forum entry, the following appeared in the email:

Hi Likely you would not have found the autoplay tab in #3 as Vista controls Autoplay functions from the Control Panel in this location Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > AutoPlay Once there make sure "use autoplay for all media and devices" is ticked and at the bottom click "reset all defaults" If that doesnt reset Autoplay check the below...... Also as you have Vista Home Premium, click start and in the start search box type *gpedit.msc *then locate the following, ...

Very strange. Had you edited your response? In any case...

I've found that gpedit.msc is not available in Home Premium - only in Ultimate and Business. I followed the advice given in the email version of your response (see above), to no effect.

Do we now go to the registry fix?

I'm just posting again. It's been a week - maybe I just got lost in the shuffle.
