Problem with a game

My grandson, who is 10 yrs old, just loves war games and when we watch him after school, he likes to play them on my computer. I'm not crazy about that but what are you going to do?

Anyhow, I bought him a game, about 6 mos ago, called "Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30." I helped him install it, and he played it without difficulty until about a week ago, when it would no longer boot up properly, issuing an error message that one of the components was not working properly (I forget which; it was something like DivX something, v.9.3)

Anyhow, I unistalled the game and then reinstalled it, thinking some file in the game may have become corrupted.

But it still won't play. Now when trying to start it, it gives a message that says the following:

    Build: (null)
OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
    CPU: GenuineIntel Unknown processor @ 3219 MHz [1911575674880.000000 0] with 511MB RAM
    Video: RADEON 9200 SE (6378)
    General protection fault!
    History: UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::postInit <- InitEngine

I am not enough of a geek to understand what any of that means, and would appreciate any help in figuring out what to do to get his game to work. I realize that in the overall scheme of things, a game is pretty trivial. But it means a lot to him.

I have Windows XP installed on my computer.

    Thanks,

Are you using the latest video card drivers and what version of DirectX do you have?

Your hardware meets minimum requirements, so it's more likely to be a driver problem.

Also, have you tried the latest patches from UBISOFT.

Insomniac, et al,

I went to UBIsoft and downloaded the patch for V.1.10.
I downloaded and installed DirectX 9.0c.

I then tried the game and got a message that says:
"Please enable Direct 3D Acceleration. Do this by starting DXDialog and enabling Direct 3D Acceleration in the Display 1/2 Tab after installing DirectX 9.0c (or later) and the latest drivers for graphics card."

I don't know how to see what video card or graphics card I have, or where to find the latest drivers. And I don't know where to find DXDialog, or how to start DX Dialog in order to follow the directions (above.)

Naturally I feel like a complete moron, but I'm willing to seem a moron in return for info on how to get this done so the game works for my grandson.

Additional suggestions along that line would be much appreciated.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Bill

Not knowing what DX or your video card is doesn't make you a moron, far from it.

Anyway, dxdiag is the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Go to Start, run and type in dxdiag then OK. (Make sure you have DirectX 9c. The tool will tell you)

If you don't have DirectX9c, go to the Windows Update or Micro$$oft site.

As far as your video card drivers, we have them HERE.

(Your graphics chip is an ATI Radeon 9200 SE as per your original post)

In case you are stuck, DirectX 9c can be downloaded HERE.

Also, please don't ever say games are trivial, you hurt my feelings.

    Hi,

Games aren't trivial, and my Grandson sure isn't trivial either.
I did find and install DirectX 9.0c (see my last note.)

I dug around a little and was able to find out that I have Ati card, Radeon 9200 SE.

I was able to find DxDiag and went there.
It showed that DirectX 9.0c is installed.
DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct3D Acceleration are both ENABLED.

I went to the Ati site and was unsure what the latest driver would be for Radeon 9200 SE. There was a rather stern warning that if one installs the wrong driver, a lot of bad things can come down, so I didn't try guessing.

    Any suggestions at this point?
Please know how much I appreciate your help on this.

I'll check back in about 8 hrs (Zzzzzzz!!)
    Thanks again,

    Bill

Our paths crossed or you didn't read my reply properly.

Our paths had crossed because I neglected to hit the refresh button.

I went to the site you gave me and went to the place you said offers downloads of drivers for Radeon products. I am sure what i need is there, but I couldn't see anything that was specifically for the 9200 SE, and am reluctant to just barge in and perhaps download the wrong thing.

Could you once more guide me in the right direction so I get the correct driver?

    HERE are the drivers.

Your card won't be individually listed as all Radeon cards use the same driver package.

    Insomnia,

That did the trick! Thanks for the help!
I went to the Ati site; it was still a little confusing in that they offerred a number of "Catalyst" products and I wasn't all that sure theat they were what we needed. But there wasn't anything else there, so I downloaded Catalyst 5.12 (largest number so I assumed latest release) and installed it.

The games now work fine; my grandson Riley will be thrilled!

It puzzles me how this happened, however. When I bought the game in question, it worked fine with the driver I had in place. There was no change to the game or any known modification of the card or driver, yet all of a sudden the game no longer worked.

Oh well, all's well that ends well.

We have a friend in Sydney named Steve Burrows (he's a cartographer and a scuba diver). He and his bride to be flew to the USA a few yrs ago, and were married in our garden room!

Thanks again, Insomnia. I really appreciate your help.
