Problem with Adobe Flash plugin and Firefox

I have had a problem with my Adobe Flash player plugin not working in Firefox. It says I need to update my flash player. When I try I get halfway through the install and it says I have a more recent player installed and quits the installation. Very frustrating. My flash player works fine in Google Chrome but not in Firefox. I have tried to install the player, the plugin, etc., but get the same result each time. Belarc Advisor computer stats appended. Please help.

    FF plugin download
    Code:
    http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_12_plugin.exe
    12.0.0.77

your txt file is unreadable for me

Thanks for reply. I have repeatedly tried to run the plugin dot exe file and get the same answer: A more recent version exists on your computer.

Am attaching my belarc stats as a .doc file.

I couldn't read either of those files but may I make a suggestion? How about going into your already installed flash player and trying to do an update from there...if it updates then your set if it doesn't then something else is amiss...have you tried looking in your plug-ins list to see if flash player is enabled?

What version does the Adobe - Flash Player page say is installed? And in "Control Panel" > "All Control Panel Items", what version does it say is installed?

Possibly a beta version(13) is installed?

@Kench, The "ComputerStats.doc" file wasn't readable for me either, finally Libre Office Writer did the trick.

When I go to uninstall programs, it doesn't show adobe flash or shockwave as a program installed at all. In Firefox plugin folder, there is no entry for shockwave flash at all. But when I try to install the latest flash, 12.0.0.7, it hangs at 50% and says I have a newer version installed. I can't seem to find that newer version and don't know where to look.
Trying to upload computer stats but only have open office (.odt) format.

Will copy and add to this if possible:

In Chrome, version 12.0.0.77 is installed. In Firefox and IE the help file says shockwave is not installed.

Did NOT know you had to have browsers closed to install this. Will try this way and see if it aborts installation again.

    Thanks.

Just downloaded the flashplayer install file ( install_flash_player_12_plugin.exe ) and closed firefox browser and attempted a fresh install. It got to 50% again and got the same error message (a newer version already installed ). ?????

In Chrome, Adobe flash player shockwave plugin is enabled.

Will try to uninstall Chrome entirely from computer (since it has the only working flash player) and then see if I can download and install flash in IE or FF.

Maybe totally ridding computer of flash and trying fresh reinstall will help.

Right now, the only way I can play or see a flash file is in Chrome browser, which I don't really like anyway.

    Opinions?

Sorry, the error message is really confusing because there is no newer version than the one you have 12.0.0.77 from March 11, 2014. (There are betas but the link I posted doesn't download a beta version).
Adobe said they were going to match flash updates to patch Tuesday but that wasn't the case in February.
Maybe if you wait, there will be a new version on patch Tuesday, April 8th and it will install.

What version of FF are you running?

  12. Gensuknives

    Gensuknives Grand pooty-meister

Firefox version 28.0 is what I have.

I was able to install flash player in IE but still can't get it to install in FF. It still gets to 50% of install and says "newer version already installed" and aborts the install. Same occurs when I try the plugin alone install.

Hopefully the patch on Tuesday will help. I'm frustrated as the devil. My wife used to call me a geek until this flash fubar got me. She will only surf with FF and I am toast until I can get a flash player up and running on FF.

Thanks so much for your input and help.

    Here's a thread from January
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/983633
It has an uninstall link and a link for the latest version - again.

Maybe uninstalling it will fix the problem.

I'd create a restore point before you run the flash uninstaller just in case it doesn't work.

Went to that January thread and attempted a new installer method.

Failed with error message. May have to wait for Adobe update Tuesday.

Appended the message as jpg file by scanning the pdf (too large to upload) and then uploading the jpg. Hope you can read it.

I never see an Install Shield Wizard when I do Adobe.
The first thing that comes up is a black screen. Let's see if I can pretend to install and grab a screenshot.
    http://www.walagata.com/thumbs/perkMjG_flash_install.JPG

After I click the "I have read", the install button becomes active and the remaining screens are black also.

I'll have a look about Windows Installer error 1722.

I am uploading the screenshot for system32\Macromed\Flash but there is no syswow64\Macromed\Flash on my computer.

When I tried to use the MSI installer I got an error message (also uploaded).

I suggest that you run the Flash Player Uninstaller before running the Flash Player 13 installers that plodr provided.

    Strange that you wouldn't have a syswow64\Macromed\Flash folder on a 64-bit system.

P.S. I couldn't find a screenshot of the system32\Macromed\Flash folder, and the screenshot of the error message was so tiny I couldn't read anything.

If you still get errors with the Flash Player 13 installer, please provide
    • the full error message
    • the contents of the FlashInstall.log file in system32\Macromed\Flash

Part of the error message titled "Adobe Flash Player 12 Plugin Installer Information" reads:
Error 1722: There is a problem with the Windows
Installer Package. A program???? as part of the setup
    did not finish as expected.
Can't make out the question marks.

    If it will help:

Just got finished uninstalling flash and installing the Flash 13 update.

DAYUM SAM!!!!! I now have flash that works.

You two guys have saved my bacon. Thank you so much for your untiring efforts. I was about to tear my hair out (at least that which is still there at my age).

Once again, MG comes to my rescue. Thought I was toast.

And, thanks to your efforts in my behalf, my wife has only demoted me to a MINOR GEEK status.

My Adobe Flash Player Update for Win7 x64 failed as expected with a "General installation error" halfway through the download.
(I don't understand how an installation can fail before its even downloaded but I'm not really surprised considering.)

    This is my fix:

    1. From the Uninstall Flash Player page download the Uninstaller for Flash Player.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Run the Uninstaller.
    4. Delete the "Flash" folder from C:\Windows\System32\Macromed
    5. Delete the "Flash" folder from C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed (x64 Only)
    6. Delete everything in C:\Users\ < username > \AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Flash Player
    7. Delete everything in C:\Users\ < username > \AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player
    8. Download and install both the IE and Plugin-Based versions of Flash Player from the Macromedia site via the Adobe Flash Player Distribution page.

Check the version using the same Uninstall Flash Player page.

Hopefully this will also work for anyone else with no other alternative.

    Regards.
    MrTom.
