I don't even know if I'm in the right forum or not. A few days ago, I answered an ad for Comcast High Speed. National Broadband, the affiilate, was running the campaign. I have cable internet, but there is not cable connection in the room where I would need the hook-up. I told their representative this, and they said it was not necessary. They even said I could do a self-intall. They sent me a cable modem and an LAN card along with some other adapter.

When I called Comcast, they said I must have cable in the same room with the computer. I know this all sounds very simplistic and I really am a newbie, even after a year of getting along pretty well (with these types of forums, that is:) .
At any rate, has anyone ever heard of this. I was so looking forward to high speed as I am still stuck wit dial-up.

Why would somone tell me that cable was not necessary in the same room, and then a service tech telling me it is - other than to sell a product of course:mad: !

Any suggestions? I really can't afford to have a new cable connection installed just for this.

Get a wireless router and wireless card from the cable company for your pc. You can then keep your wireless cable router in the other room and connect via the wireless card in your pc. Don't forget to secure the wireless connection. Instructions usually come with the wireless router.

I have a B*****d (sorry, not sure if I'm allowed to say the company name, its pretty easy to figure out who they are anyway) broadband cable connection at home, in the study.

On the subject of setting up a wireless router and wireless card for a laptop. I would like to access the broadband cable connection using my laptop in the another room (approx. 7m away).

I understand the wireless router and wireless card for the laptop part, but would like to know what kind of specifications to look for so I don't lose any of the speed of the broadband connection when setting up the laptop. Could you please let me know what to look for (with a firewall)?

OK....so now you have a broadband connection and cable modem. Did you purchase the wireless equipment from the cable company? If so, usually the modem and wireless router are integrated in one device and the wireless card will match their wireless device. Is that the case? Or, are you considering purchasing a wireless router and wireless card seperately?

Yep, separately. I've had the broadband for a while now. Just wanted to make better use of it with the laptop. Looking to get a wireless router and a wireless network card/adapter thing for the laptop. Would 108Mbps be quick enough to not notice any downgrade of the connection speed?

To be honest, I have not noticed any real difference in Speedbooster, 108 Mbps or 54 Mbps, although I am not a game player. I understand if you want to play games the highest speed you can get is what you would want. That aside, I like Linksys Wireless -G Broadband router with SpeedBooster. Get a matching PCMCIA card for your laptop, and you're ready to go. If you are a gamer, you should probably seek advice from the gaming community...there should be plenty of them on this forum.
