I downloaded CamStudio recently to my laptop for an urgent need but I think maybe the file is corrupt because there's no help menu. What video settings should I have for recording a video tutorial from a website?

What about audio? I set to record audio from speakers I get error message: WaveoutGetSelectControl () failed. I am also unable to exit recording – or rather the square that comes during recording keeps flashing and the only way to stop this happening is to exit the program by task manager. It would also be nice to cut down the file size and only record the video rather than the whole computer screen. I've got till Sunday night to download several hours of video tutorials, then they are gone. :(:(

    My laptop:

    Win 10 Home
    Core i5 2.4 GHz
    4GB ram

Cam Studio doesn't have a help menu as such - it is freeware that hasn't been developed for at least two years and there is no support as such - but the top bar menu when you open it is pretty self-explanatory in 'Region' when you want to choose what on the screen you want to capture, and 'Options' > 'Audio Options' on what to select for the audio output.
A google search brings up plenty of tutorials from users. Try that.
    This is a basic guide:

Thanks for explaining the missing help menu and thanks for the link. I still have the problem of recording the sound from computer speakers (see my initial post). Is there a workaround? The default is NO SOUND, which in this case defeats the object.

Is it possible to post a link to one of the video tutorials. There may be alternate ways to capture the video.

This is old but it shows exactly how it works for me with sound. It explains how to reduce the size of the output file and how to set sound capture:

Just doing a 'Cam Studio Tuturials' internet search brings up many many tutorials

I downloaded DivX from its own site but when I started installing it, Avast came up with several warnings about malware. They came so fast that I didn't have time to see more than about a trojan Pup32 or something like that. I did a virus scan and the codec seems to be virus free but probably because Avast had already done its job... Trying to run the program again, I get a message telling me to check my internet connection... Downloading from Majorgeeks (For Windows 10.5) I got the same file, but now it goes directly to the message about internet connection. Deleting the installer and downloading it again does not solve the problem. I only got the warning after I lauched the installer, so can I assume that it is a false positive? Would turning my virus checker off allow me to go on with the installation?

My options are Cinepack codec by Radius, Intel IYUV - listed twice and Microsoft Video 1. Which should I choose?

I tried to download CamStudio lossless codec as well but the site was blocked with a warning that it contains malware. I went ahead anyway and tried to download the codec but Chrome blocked the installation as a harmful application...
I uninstalled Avast for now and ran the installer: Comodo firewall informs me that DivX comes with Win32.OpenCandy.f@1 Is this part of the codec or something I can safely attempt to remove without affecting the program? By the way, DivX is not just a codec, but three programs: Converter, Player and Web Player. You have to choose at least one to go ahead with the install AND I still can't choose that format in CamStudio!

I don't see any of the problems you're having. As a test I just installed the principle program 2.7.2 from sourceforge from the second link lower down on this page: http://camstudio.org/ on a Win10 system. I had to disable my Internet Security program on that system (Comodo IS - temporarily disabling AV, Cloud AV, HIPs, Sandbox and FW) to get it to install but I had to carefully click on 'decline' to the various search engine, home page and other offered options before just the program itself installed.
I did not install any other codec.
I then proceeded to record a short News item, with audio set for speakers, and use the fixed region options just to record a medium sized window and not the whole screen. I ignored the 'WaveoutGetSelectControl ()' that came up in audio.
It worked fine, it recorded the short news item with full sound.
