Problem with "Catalyst Control Center"

Win7 X64 Home Premium SP1 - this is a Dell laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 550v video. Every time the PC loads to the desktop, I get this error message: "Catalyst Control Center: Host application has stopped working" (see screen shot attached below). I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the driver/software, I tried Windows update, I know that the ATI/AMD Catalyst video drivers are somewhat dependent on the .NET Framework so I installed the latest version. No dice. Malware scans are clean. There's surprisingly nothing listed in the Event Viewer that points to any issue with the Catalyst Control Center (or anything else). This problem does not seem to have any effect on functionality, so I could probably just remove it from the msconfig startup list, but that isn't a "fix", that's a "workaround".

Thanks again tgell.... I'll check it out- maybe today, probably tomorrow.... my work day is about over :drink

I'll report my results... and yeah, I noticed the different spelling also. That came directly from the Dell site....

:( Well, the fix linked above isn't going to work....
The two Public Key Tokens listed above do not appear on the PC... there are NONE associated with ATI. Also, in the link posted above, there's this bit of info:
:confused I'm not quite sure what this means, but apparently the fix is not for the exact issue I'm having.

Thanks though! It was a good effort! I'm gonna keep working at it and get something figured out.....

Here's something I found interesting.... I uninstalled the driver I downloaded from Dell, the video driver is listed as being for the Mobility Radeon HD v550. I rebooted after the driver uninstall, and checked the device manager; Windows has installed its own driver and has the video listed as the Mobility Radeon HD 4650! So it could be a fail on Dell's side; they're hosting a not-100%-compatible driver? I found the right driver over at the AMD/ATI web site, and we'll see how that goes. It's nice to see that AMD/ATI is now finally hosting the notebook video drivers! For years, they didn't have 'em and told the user to "check with the system manufacturer".

The driver from the AMD/ATI site does the exact same thing as the Dell driver: "Catalyst Control Center: Host application has stopped working". My next procedure will be to uninstall the driver again; reboot; go to Device Manager; right click > update driver > point it to the extracted Dell driver and install ONLY the drivers via the Device Manager instead of running the setup.exe. It's really weird that the CCC keeps acting up. I'm still Googling the issue, but not really getting anywhere.

Have you thought about uninstalling the CCC, and then use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to uninstall anything left behind, then dump it from the registry?

No, but it's a good thought. However, the Installer CleanUp Tool is generally for failed installs, and the software on this laptop installs perfectly. It's when the desktop loads up that the "CCC has stopped" error message comes up. I now have the laptop working perfectly using the method I outlined in post #6 above. I might just mess with it for another 20 minutes with the CleanUp Tool and we'll see what happens.... thanks for the idea!
