I was hoping someone would be able to help me. I just downloaded the demo of Armies of Exigo as my hubby wants to actually buy the game, and I told him to try it before he buys it... you get the idea.

Anyways, when we go to load up the demo we get an error saying: DirectX 9 is not available.

So i went to the Microsoft site and downloaded Direct x 9, since the version we had previously was 8 I believe. Anyways, even with directx 9 on the system and the dxdiag showing that it is indeed installed, the demo program will not run and displays the same error.

    Any advice?

And I'm not sure if it's related or not, but the dxdiag gets a pop-up saying that it has detected that there may have been a problem accessing Direct3DDraw the last time this program was used. It asks whether or not we would like to bypass Direct3D at this time.

    Oh the system specs are:
    Compaq Presario 5000
    Windows ME (4.9 Build 1300)
AMD Duron Processor, MMX, 3DNow, -700Mhz
    320 MB Ram

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

It certainty looks related and suggests that your graphics driver is not DirectX 9 capable. By running the DxDiag tests will confirm this. However, you didn't say what graphics card you have and I would suggest that if the DxDiag test confirm that your graphics card cannot run the DirectX 9 tests to update your graphics driver. Is it a "NVidia GeForce2 MX-based graphics card"? If so, try here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

    Nvidia Vanta LT
    Main Driver: nvdisp.drv
    Version: 4.12.0001.0758
    Mini VDD: nvmini.vxd

I "enabled" Direct 3D acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration (as they were both showing disabled) and ran the rests associated with them, seeing the spinning cube... the bottom then says All tests were successful.

I am sort of computer literatate, but I don't know beyond this how to tell what my graphics card is?!?

right click on my computer, select properties, go to the hardware tab and click device manager, what does it say for display adapters?

Have you tried downloading updated newer drivers for your Vanta LT? The Vanta LT isn't the greatest video chipset for games, it is mostly aimed for very basic usages. Most come with 4-16 megs of ram....

Hmmmm, perhaps your hubby may need to buy a new video card....

I did as suggested in going to Nvidia and downloading the new drivers. Not a good idea. I guess the computer (or the card itself) won't accept them, because since installing them (it's good for Ge Force and a list of other cards including the Vanta LT) I'm having more than my share of problems.

The computer consistently won't load, and after 2 unsuccessful attempts it launches itself into safe mode... which i'm operating in now.

I don't know whether or not to get rid of the new drivers, and try to find the old ones again or what....

    HELP!

try rolling back to the old driver and see if the computer will boot normally. if you go into the device manager, display adapters, right click on your card and click properties. one of the tabs says drivers and there should be an option there to roll back the driver.

There is no option to rollback to the old driver. Under properties I'm showing links for Driver File Details and Update Driver.

In clicking update driver, it searches for files that it says can't be found on the computer... nvaml.inf, dmcpl.exe, generic.tvp, nview.dll, nvshell.dll, ntvicpl.cpl, nvwcplen.hlp, nwiz.exe, nvcpcs.hlp, nvcpel.hlp, nvcphe.hlp.... it goes on and on and on...

According to Your above system, I think Your VGA card is onboard so it can not be enough to solve this problemn for playing this game
