I have had a few problems with my internet connection dropping. It does not happen as often as it used to,but it still does every once in awhile. When I click on the fix and repair,I get the following message, There may be a problem with your DNS configuration. Windows failed to find the well known host www.microsoft.com using DNS.
    The server may be down
Then there are other times when I click fix and repair,I get my connection back and it is fixed, until it drops again.
And idea how I can fix this or what is going on? Thanks for the info.

try an ipconfig/flushdns in the command prompt.

I will give that a shot when I get home from work.

I just tried the ipconfig/flushdns at the command prompt.
It says the requested operation requires elevation

you have to run command prompt as administrator

How do I do that? Thanks for the help

just go to wherever you found command prompt in your start menu, right click it, and click on run as administrator. that should do that trick as far as "require elevation" error messages go.

I am still dropping my connection and getting the same message even after doing the ipconfig/flushdns
    What can I try next?

What is your OS? If it's XP (which I doubt since you didn't react negatively to the "run as administrator stuff) update to SP3. Even for Vista you could try installing the newest updates, there are some rumors about microsoft having released some worm that does this sort of stuff.

Can I ask have you tried to set up a static IP address for the use of port forwarding?? is so you might have entered the wrong DNS server address. Just asking.

I have not set up a static IP address. Connection dropped again this morning and got the same message. I am at work right now. It just has me stumped so far. Do not know what to try next?

    My 2 cents -

Sounds like you may have an intermittent loss of connection. What kind of service do you have and who is the provider?

Can you access the routers tables? Do you know the routers IP address and the gateway address it is using?

I have cable and the ISP is Optimum Online. How can I find the routers IP address and gateway?

OK....at a command prompt enter "ipconfig /all" and post the results.

I will do that when I get home from work.
How do I copy all the info and paste it here?

  18. jconstan

    jconstan MajorGeek

    type "ipconfig /all >>c:\results.txt"

that will place the output in a file called results.txt. Then when you post a reply there is a feature in this message board where you can attach a file to the post. Scroll down to manage attachments button.

Do I type this in the command field?

    Says access denied

are you on an administrator account? youre being denied access to create a file on your root drive C:

Signed on as admin. Keep getting c:\Windows\system32>

  24. KingSteve

    KingSteve MajorGeek

try the command again then. ipconfig/all>>c:\config.txt

    still getting access denied?

when I type that in and press enter, I get this

    c:\Windows\system32>

oh i see. yeah thats right. now go into my computer and c drive, there should be a txt file in there as whatever you named it. that command is just telling ipconfig to send the output to a file, so it wont show any output on your screen.

yeah it worked. first of all, are you not able to access any website at all from the computer in question?

I am able to access everything right now.
I have a problem dropping my connection every once in awhile.
Sometimes it takes a long time before I am able to establish a connection again. When I select the the repair button is when I get the Problem with DNS configuration message.
