Problem with external DVD

    I am trying to do a "hot swap" and have an internal DVD hooked up to my laptop with and IDE to USB cable. My laptop recognised the DVD once but since then I haven't been able to get the DVD player to be controlled by the laptop. It powers up but the disc just keeps spinning ?? Running XP Pro on my laptop.
    Any suggestions ??
