Problem with Hotmail

When I open up New Message while using Hotmail evrything is fine aprt from the box immediatly above the text area. This area usually has a variety of icons (Copy, paste, Italics, Underline, Emoticons, etc...) but about 3 days ago they failed to appear. All I get is a rectangle with a little box with a red x inside it. But the weird thing is, if i move the mouse over where an icon should be it tells me what icon is there and I can use it perfectly well. So although I cant see the icon I can use it. Anyone?
