This is gonna sound really basic I know, but on my laptop pressing shift and the @ key produces ", and pressing shift and the 2 key produces a @! Also pressing shift and the 3 key produces a # where the pound sign should be.. Help!

    Shift + 1 = !
    Shift + 2 = @
    Shift + 3 = #

    What exactly is the problem?

Might be a keyboard region error.
Make sure the keyboard settings in control panel are set to the region/country where you bought your laptop.

Looking at my keyboard it sounds like you are using a UK keyboard but it is set up as a keyboard from the same region as Shang (US?).

You can change your regional settings by going into -

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional Settings

(may just be start -> Control Panel, depending on your Windows Edition.)

and then check the general locale is the country that you are in and, assuming it is then go to the Input Locales tab and add UK or whichever country your keyboard layout is.
