Problem with Laptop Monitor

There is a problem that I am having with a Compaq Presario laptop monitor. Anytime I have to have to restart the computer the monitor reboots but the screen is black on startup. I can hear windows load but nothing appears from the start of the restart process. If I turn off the computer by holding in the power button the monitor still will not turn on. The only way to get the monitor back is to turn the laptop off and let it sit for about 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes everything is back to normal. Any suggestions?

There has been a change with the laptop problem recently today. Now it is now turning on during startups not just on restart. Also a 10 minutes wait before reboot is not always working. The monitor turns on randomly for reboots.
