I have an LG GSA-4166b dvd burner installed in my computer. i wanted to put some video files on a dvd so i could free up some space on my hard drive but the drive wasn't recognizing the blank disc.i have burned dvds with this before and it worked perfect, but i haven't burned anything for about 6 months. it will read blank cds and burn them but will not read the dvds.i also updated the driver and the firmware but it didn't do anything. don't much about computers so any help would be greatly appreciated. if you need anymore info just let me know. thanks again

What type of DVDs are you attempting to record to - are they DVD+R or -R?

Does your DVD-rewriter support the type of discs you are using?

Are they the same brand and style you've been using? As an example I use memorex dvd -r and I tried hp dvd-r but my dvd drive wont recognize them. (and its an hp branded dvd burner .....go figure)

i use memorex dvd-r. these are what i used before. i bought one pack of them and thought that maybe i just had a pack of bad dics( if that can happen?) so i took them back and got another pack and still not showing up has a blank dics. i use memorex cd-r and those do show up has blank. i also read on here to delete the upper and lower filters but then my drive would even work so i had to do a system restore.

i've had a dvd burner go on me the same way, it was a sony (actually it was a lite-on with the sony name plate) . I trashed it, as it wouldn't read or write dvds anymore, only cds. I tried it in 3 diff computers all with the same result. Only thing i can guess is try to use a lens cleaner as a last ditch effort even tho it will read cds

Yes, dvd burners have two lasers one for CDs and one for DVDs. Your DVD laser is probably shot. Check to see if it can read an old DVD.
