Specs - Windows XP Pro, SP2, Office Pro 2003, various other programs.

I click on the icon for Microsoft updates. It takes me to a message thanking me for wanting to update my Microsoft programs, but that I need to have IE5 or better to proceed. System currently is running IE7 and also has Foxfire 2. I removed Foxfire to see if that might be the culprit. Nope! I reloaded IE7 and tried again, same story. I just can't seem to get the system to recognize that I actually am running the later version of IE7. Only other variant thrown into this mix is that the hard drive crashed last week (updates were working fine). Machine was under warranty and technician came out and replaced the hard drive. I re imaged the drive, and everything else is fine. Just this one glitch. Any ideas?

See if you can get your hands on and old version of IE 5.5 and install it first then install IE 6 over that and finally IE 7 over them all. If your unsure where to start try searching the term "ftp search engines" and see about fining a few pages that will search ftp pages where people have stored old programs then type in "Internet Explorer" and see if you can find an old version. Just make sure you choose an english version.

Thanks for the info. Still don't understand why MS didn't recognize IE7 after re imaging the hard drive. All else seems fine.

PS: Its amazing how it grew in size up to v6.0, and then shrank back to around 13 megs. Anyone know why? Baz

Do you also get an error code, since most errors from MS also give an error code.

No, I wish I did. The icon sends me to the MS update page and I get a splash screen stating that I need IE5 or better to continue.
