    Windows XP
(let me know if you need more info)

    here's my problem:
My sound randomly stopped working and I do not know how to fix it. If i go to Device Manager, the following is listed under the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers:
    - Audio Codecs
    - Legacy Audio Drivers
    - Legacy Video Capture Devices
    - Media Control Devices
    - Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver*
    - Realtek High Definition Audio
    - Video Codecs

There is an yellow exclamation point next to Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver. When I click on the exclamation point, the following message is under Device Status:

"A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

*I saw on another post to disable it and reboot but now it's gone and still no sound.

    Hi

What Service Pack to XP are you using? (its a needed question as Audio now has an extra issue in XP in that the Microsoft UAA drivers are needed if you dont have SP3 installed)

What I would try is to install the UAA Driver from HERE and reboot (do reboot its a needed step) then install the Audio driver for your PC from HERE

Have you had a malware infection reciently? or do scan for malware on your PC as its a possible cause.

    Hi

Not necessarily, it would be best at this moment to install the UAA driver then the Audio one, best to fix the audio issue before SP3 is installed.

Have you had malware reciently (virus or trojan)?

No malware recently, not since I reloaded Windows a month or so ago. I did as you said and still no change. I'm beginning to think the sound card is busted. I've tried a lot of stuff and no change. btw, is there any real point to SP3? This isn't my computer and my step-dad wants to know what it would do or if it would slow things down or make more stuff not work.

    Hi

Yes SP3 adds some comptability fixes and stability fixes to Windows XP, but if your happy with how Windows works so far with all your applications then its ok to leave at SP2, but I would always advise updating Windows for security purposes.

What I would do next is to check in Services that the Windows Audio service is Started and its Startup Type is set to Automatic, then in the same Windows Audio service, click the Dependencies tab and you will see a list of other services, click the + next to each one and then check that all those services listed are set to Started and Satrtup Type is Automatic.

Do you still have the yellow ! mark in Device Manager for audio?
