Problem with MS Word 2003

My wife uses this program to create reports for work. As of this morning at 11am, every time she tries to save a document the program crashes or freezes. Then it says "not responding". Now when she tries to open an already saved document to edit it and re-save it, the program again crashes. Is there anything I can do? I have been to the site to download the updates for MS Office, but it has not helped.
