Problem with MS word

Quick question before I reinstall office in this computer. I'm having a problem where I can't edit or make any changes in any word doc. I can't type, I can't use any pull down menus, everything is grayed out. this is office for students and teachers 2k3. Thanks for your help.

 

I would try a Detect and Repair first, under the help menu.
