You set it in the options of the program to not load on startup.

Here are some step-by-steps if ya need em:

How To Disable MSN Messenger in Options
Start up MSN messenger service. Go to the tools menu, choose options, choose the preferences, uncheck the tick box next to "Run this program when Windows starts" next close the program by doing a right click on the tray icon and choosing exit. Also uncheck log into messenger service in outlook express.

If (Only If) Above Does Not Work, Try This

    2. Click the Windows Setup tab.
    3. In the Components window, click Communications, then Details.
    4. Uncheck the box beside the MSN Messenger option.

That will stop it from loading up, good call.

    However, it won't uninstall it.

Sure won't...Bah, that's an ugly one.

Below article covers everything for Rudie123...from my mistake, to removing MSN Messenger from the system tray, and even going into the registry and really removing it. Reads fast, and well-written. Not a long-winded, dense howto. Read it Rude123, and let us know how it goes for ya.

Could be this is a simpler way if the appropriate backup precautions are taken first. Stumbled across it surfing t'other day so i am not the author

Open Messenger (you don't have to sign in!) window and click Tools > Options >
General Tab > Untick the boxes in the 'sign in' area. ;)

Are we talkin' about "MSN Messenger" or "Windows Messenger"? Because they are two seperate entities. MSN must be downloaded & Windows Messenger is installed with XP.

To completely remove "Windows Messenger" there is this little utility.
