Problem with my connection or my ISP?

Lately I have been getting some serious problems with my internet usually around 7-10 (which makes me think its my ISP, want to double check though). My connection gets very slow, but I am able to remain connected to mIRC and AIM for some reason. When I try pinging stuff from cmd while this is happening I have about 1/10ish chance of getting a response.

My connection setup is kind of wierd. I have a router connected to the modem, and a wired computer and wireless off the router. No computer is directly connected to the router I guess? Im not very good at this.

The non-wireless computer may of been connected when these problems started happening. Could that cause these problems? I know it is usually in use 7-10 when I have problems, I can try and keep track. Nothing is wrong with my router/wireless from what I can tell, its been fine for about 2 years.

Any ideas?


EDIT: I wanted to take a look at my motorolla router from http://192.168.10.1/ Is there a default pass or something? I remember taking a look at it a while back. Did I make one back then?

 

Try this: username is "admin"
default default password is "motorola".

have you tried resetting your modem, and your router? unplug the power cables, and wait like 20-30 seconds or so, then plug back in your modem, and then plug back in your router (i've had better luck, with modem 1st, then router). are you saying that you used the computer from 7-10 (am, or pm)? do you have cable or dsl. have you checked to make sure all your connections are tight?

are you getting to a login screen?

edit - this might be a stupid question, but are you sure that is the correct url to log into your router? normally, it's 19.2168.0.1 (or something like that), i've never seen a "10", but that could have been a typo? if you give us your router info (model #), we might be able to look it up? - g/l, sos

 

Okay is this other PC on between 7-10? If there are more than 1 PC "sharing" the internet at any time then the bandwidth will get split between them. If the other system is on and they are DL or Uploading this will significantly affect your internet speeds.

Thanks for the router login stuff. I just wanted to double check it looked ok, and that no one else was on my wireless.

I believe it is cable. I have to double check.

It is 6-10 pm which are peak hours I guess.

Turning off/disconnecting the other computer doesn't do anything. Neither did power cycling the modem/router.

I downloaded a trial of network magic. It doesn't show anyone else on using my wireless. The strange thing is, when I do the internet speed test, I can get up to 10mb download rate yet I cant load up pages on the internet. This other program called Uniblue speedupmypc will also show huge peaks in my internet when doing the speed test. Other than that it is mostly completly random from 7-10. I managed to post this after refreshing for a bit.

 

Have you got the security set up properly for your wireless network, I am wired to my Router but my Motherboard does have wireless and picks up some local "unsecured" and secured networks and it is very easy for me to start using the unsecured networks (just hit connect which I did just for a test!). Lucky for my neighbors I am an ethical person and have my own ISP (plus the speeds are a lot better).

 

Well the network magic program shows me a map of my whole network, and all I see is internet -> router -> My computer/other computer

Would people be able to connect without me seeing?

Lets rule out the possibility that someone is exploiting your network.

I don't know whether or not you can tell if your being exploited as I don't have a wireless set-up yet but I don know that you "must" make it secure. Lets face it even if you could note someone using it today hackers are a very clever bunch, always evolving, and will find some way to cloak themselves in the future, so read the articles and make your wireless network "disappear" from potential hackers.

 

I never thought I could secure my wireless without having a computer hooked directly to the router?
