Problem with my notebook

Ok well I shut down my laptop everything was working fine, turned it back on about 8 hours later and it would not bypass the loading screen.

When I turned it on I had an error message, at the top stated I should insert my Windows disk and select repair my computer; also suggesting it may be a hardware/software problem.

On the bottom of this black screen had a few options; "Run Windows Normally" "Run windows in safe mode" "Run windows in safe mode with command prompt" etc. I selected Start windows normally and it would not bypass the loading screen, it sat their for minutes; about 30 seconds after sitting there I heard a clicking noise from my laptop followed by a little grinding noise.

It doesn't work in any other mode on startup; and when I put in my windows disk it doesn't boot up the CD.

    Additional info:
I am using windows vista 64 bit
    manufacturer is ASUS
    This is a laptop/notebook not a PC

Any help appreciated this laptop is only 2 months old, and if it looks like this laptop can be repaired please let me know how much it would cost.

That doesn't sound good, if it's only 2 months old then you might want to return it for replacement.

When on the black screen with safe mode etc, did you see an option to "Start Windows with last known good configuration"?

    If so, try that.

That was another option, didn't work either

So you actually cannot get windows to boot at all?

I'm thinking you have a hardware problem, most likely the HDD.
You said it clicked, was it fairly loud? I had a HDD die on my laptop but it was more of a clunk.

You said when you put windows CD in it doesn't boot, now does it recognise there is a cd drive and a disc in there?

Can you see both HDD and cd drive in BIOS?

That's the sound of the hd dying. Get an RMA and return it under warranty.

Nope, no matter what the mode it will not boot, the sound is a little click sort of and then a beep following the click, it sounds like a couple of devices were rubbing upon each other to make the click.

I put my windows CD and tried booting from CD; it restarted my laptop and it just came back to the same error message with windows startup as I posted before.

Well I guess if it's still under warenty then you be best to return it.

Now, the cd did spin , so it recognises you have a cd drive.
Try a HDD tester, theres a few out there, try this one http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
It's got a lot of stuff on it and you should be able to test you HDD to see if it's ok or not.

I agree with Plodr though, thats not a good sound :(

    is it repairable?

    edit:

how does it die after 2 months? ;l

Repairable? Only a good hardware tech could tell you that, I doubt it though.

How does it die in 2 months?.... Could just be a bad one, it happens. I had a brand new PS3 that died in 3 weeks. Just bad luck.

Like several of us said, if it's only 2 months old and it's under waranty then you'd be best to take it back, if you try to open it you will invalidate your waranty.

only thing I can think of is me leaving it on over night a few nights to download a bunch of shit, most it's been on for is 18 hours straight to dl my shit

whatever, guess it's just my luck ``

can anyone else vouch that this is most likely my notebook dying?

What part of the word "YES" don't you understand? Many other posters have advised to RMA the laptop.

That sound from the HD is called the "click of death".

what part of "VOUCH" do you not understand?

and also I have another question, when you purchase a computer from best buy does it usually come with a warranty, or are you obliged to purchase one yourself.

I found a sample of the click of death, this is not exactly what my laptop is doing, I hear the sample click from the click of death, however it never stops; it can go on forever. Also this noise isn't as occassional, you'll here the click then the beep following right after it then 10 seconds later it will do it again.

is this still harddrive failure or what?
