Hi. My pc has been broken for a few weeks now because I dont know whats wrong with it. Basically, it started by getting disc read errors, and thought it was my HDD as I had been switching the two hard drive cables around quite a bit. I had two hard drives in my pc, but only one sata cable in the PSU. Anyway, I decided to buy a new hard drive along with a new GPU. After a few days of having my new hard drive and gpu in the pc, I started getting the disc read error again, and thought it was unlikely both HDD's could break. Now the PC is totally dead and wont start at all. I have a small light on my motherboard that still illuminates, and a friend said that the 12v line may have gone, and the 5v line is still intact. I dont want to go buying stuff for my pc until I know what the issue is. Im not sure if its the motherboard, PSU, CPU... I was hoping if someone here knows what the issue could be. I had no warning before my PC shut down, I was playing Mafia 2 as it died. Thanks. :D

usually you get a beep code when you turn on pc, if like you mentioned you get nothing I would check the bios battery on the motherboard it's usually around 3 0r 4 dollars from radio shack.

Thanks for the reply. I bought a new PSU the other day and now the PC turns on and boots into windows, but its still being really slow at times. It even completely freezes up sometimes. A friend suggested I scan the HDD for disk read errors, which took about 4 hours. My friend then done one himself and that only took 2 minutes. My HDD is new so I dont think thats the issue. I really think its my motherboard now, as my internet doesnt always connect, and my HDD seems to run slow. Both of which hook up to the motherboard. If all I have to replace is the battery, that will be great. I'll try replacing that. Thanks for the reply.

The battery probably isn't relevant if the PSU fixed the boot problem.

When you got the new HD did you do a fresh install of the operating system?
Does it freeze on both the old and new HDs?

I havent put my old drive back in, just incase I damage my new PSU cables somehow, as this one wasnt cheap. Im pretty sure I done a fresh install of the OS too. I'm wondering if its windows 7 now, these problems seemed to have come around since I bought windows 7 in January. I found a device in the device manager that had an issue and when googling the "location" it was to do with the HDD and motherboard. When I installed some drivers off my motherboard disk, that issue went away, but its still being really slow. I'm going to try and install Vista back on my drive to see if that solves the issue. Ill post my result here :)
