    Hi,

So someone set up a network for me on my 2 Win 7 computers & now on one of them, it says it can't find the network.

I've tried to run diagnosis & figure it out on my own, but nothing I do is working :(

I copy files from one computer to the other (not vice versa). I think that's the computer (the one that doesn't work) needs to be fixed, as I can still access the files on the computer they are copied to.

    Can someone help?

    Thanks

Take a look at Eldon's post #4 HERE. For the first run uncheck all the tests except Networking and see if that fixxes it. If not just run the full set. Be patient.

His issue is about some application, that's not my issue.

So you copy stuff to say PC2, you can see the files (share) on PC2, but PC2 can not see PC1? Why if you never copy the files back (not vice versa) does it matter?
If you can see the other PC it is not really a network issue, it is a sharing issue.
If hit the Windows key +R and type cmd & OK try pinging the other PC by name* or IP. What happened?
Hit the Windows key +R and type \\pcname & OK, does it ask for a password or open Explorer with the files?

    * To find the PC name hit Windows key +R and type cmd & OK
In that window type hostname & hit enter
To find the IP type ipconfig & hit enter

Maybe a timing coincidence but check for the recent Windows Update patches KB4480970 and KB4480960, one or both have been responsible for networking issues over the last few days: ComputerWorld

That's EXACTLY what I thought. :( I'll have to read that.

    I'm sorry if I didn't explain properly.

In order for me to copy the files from PC1 to PC2, it has to connect to PC2 right? LOL It's not. It's saying it can't access the network for PC2.

But I can still see the files on PC2 (while on PC2) that were copied over there days ago, so I'm not sure if that means the networking is working on PC2, but just not on PC1 or what.

Which PC name? I did that on PC1. I don't really want to type it here. It's strange though b/c the host name has no spaces before or after the dash, but the PC name does.

Why do you need the IP?

    Thanks

You would ping PC1 from PC2 - vice versa - it would prove you have network connectivity - you can use the hostname or IP address.
Also try pinging the Gateway address... as ie ping 192.168.1.1 in my example, from both PCs. Either of them time out?

Ok, we tried to uninstall one of the Windows updates. The other one we COULDN'T FIND Bloody MS, but that didn't help at all.

In the end we used the IP to access the computer, but that's not right, we shouldn't have to do that, so MS BETTER fix this issue b/c I don't want to have to go thru this again.

So to reiterate, when going to Win Explorer & clicking on Network & then the name of the computer, it doesn't find it, but when we put the IP in the address bar it does.

    Thanks everyone

I posted this solution (post #2) in another thread here. You might want to try it.

You could always map the share as a "drive" with a reconnect at logon option.
in CMD type net use z: \\pcname\sharename
This would make the shared folder drive "z" use any letter you want (that is not already in use).
Then you just go to (My) (This) Computer and it is there.

So unfortunately we never deleted the update on the 2nd computer & that's what the issue was. Once that was done it WAS FIXED!!!

Unfortunately I had automatic updates & it installed itself again & now I have to do that all over again.

I was on the phone with the TERRIBLE tech support at MS & told the techie to tell THEM to do another update. That was 3 days ago. So far nothing.

Perhaps you need to step away from automatic updates?
I've only done manual updates since October 2016 when MS started bundling.
We have 4 Windows 7 computers. I write down the monthly security updates. Read about problems, wait 3 or 4 weeks when either the problems get resolved or I feel brave. I also make an image before I patch. That way if something breaks on any or all of the computers, I can restore the image.
