Was recently using the MSN Messenger Beta and discovered that version 7.0 had been released so upgraded and all worked fine for a few days. I then found that when I signed in, it would freeze and then have to exit it through task manager. This happens every time, so I restored back to before I installed the new 7.0 and went back to the beta which worked fine. I now downloaded version 7 off the msn site and still getting the same freezing problem, sign in, try to open the main messenger window, scroll down a bit and everything freezes, or someone will open a conversation with me and I can't open it because it's frozen! Any ideas???

Un-install MSN7 full or Beta whatever one you have run a registry cleaner plus check the programs folder for a left over MSN folder and delete it, delete temp internet cache and contents of the windows temp folder and then re-install the full MSN7.

    what firewall you using?

try deleting MSN for the firewalls list of programs run MSN and let the firewall alert you to this program trying to access the net and say YES.

or temp close your firewall and see if MSN is ok?

Well it's weird that it started working and then suddenly stopped, didn't do any network changes and I don't think it's network related at all, as the program only freezes after a few seconds but windows messenger is working fine at the moment.
I've also tried different users on msn 7 and none work. Will give those both a try now.

Does it look like the main window is fully loaded before it freezes?

Also, do you have Ad-aware installed?

Yeh I sign in and can see all my contacts then everything freezes. Yep AdAware is installed.

You would think Messenger 7 would be an improvement over 6, but sadly all they could come up with was a nudge and a wink. :)

Anyway, make sure you don't have Windows Messenger running silently in the background or it can cause this.

The executable for Windows Messenger is msmsgs.exe. Try killing it with msconfig or similar (it may keep coming back though) or renaming it to msmsgs.old

There is a feature called Ad-Watch in Ad-aware than can cause problems with the installation of MSN 7.0.

Disable it or Ad-aware and see if it helps. Just a guess. ;)

Windows messenger isn't running, can't find adwatch anywhere in adaware and i'm running a scan now, will see if it works after.

    msn 7 rocks :)
get a patch clean out all the banner ads and reconfigure your firewall to be able to receive/send files
its not that it freezes it just takes a bit longer to load it can freeze if u try and perform about 200 other things while waitting :p

Mcadam88, out of curiosity how did you check that Windows Messenger wasn't running?

I installed the paid Zone Alarm Firewall yesterday and since then Msn 7 is playing up too. What happens sounds about the same... you go to log in and it takes ages, then u get alerted how many emails u have recieved, but yout contact list and all the side tabs cept the messenger tab are just white screen. Close and reopen and it works on the second / thrird attempt. An annoyence yes, but im pleased that 7 now shows what your listening to on your media player :)

Selected it to not run in the background and closed it in task manager.

Ok.. this doesnt get rid of the problem, but it does circumnavigate it....

On messenger click Tools, Options, Connection, Advanced Settings, and then UNCHECK all the boxes.

This apparently works unless u using SIMP. Like i say, tis not ideal, but at least it knocks out the problem... i would assume that you can then recheck them after logging in, and just remember to uncheck on logging out, or just leave them unchecked.

    Hope this helps

McAdam, using Task Manager to kill Windows Messenger only does so temporarily.

It will come back on and sign in again automatically.

HERE are various ways to disable or remove it.

Try MSN Messenger without Windows Messenger running in the background and see how it goes.

windows messenger should always be turned off. There is no need for it and it is used to transmit unsolicited spam and similar.

The MSN 7 is a conflict with a firewall, and should be resolved by my suggestion below

To turn off windows messenger HERE has instructions for all windows platforms

You are talking about Windows Messenger Service.

I am talking about Windows Messenger.

    Two completely different things.

    whoops... me being dim! lol

HERE is a topic on how to disable it!

Have u tried the method stated earlier? That should allow MSN7 to run fine

that unchecking thing doesn't seem to help. I tried that and it still freezes in the smae way. My housemate is also experiencing this problem. a side effect for me seems to be that from the time MSN freezes to the time that I close it via the CTRL+ALT+DEL box, my net access is down. i can't view webpages, recieve pings, etc...

wondering if that side effect is affecting anyone out there?
