Someone sent me a virus through AOL Instant Messenger which caused my computer to send the virus to everyone on my buddy list. I tried running my Norton Anti-Virus, but the program will not launch. I tried running it in Safe Mode, but it still won't work. I've tried several online virus scans including Panda, but only one of them worked. After deleting the infected files I still can not open my Norton Anti-Virus in Normal or Safe Mode. My computer seems to be running normal for the most part with the exception that I can't run a virus scan. Any ideas on how I can get my Norton to launch.

Try running Tren Micro Sysclean in [SAFE] mode.

That's the one that I tried. When I scanned my computer about 2 dozen files came up. I deleted those files but I still can't run my Norton.

Follow the steps outlined in this thread. This will free you from any viruses, trojans and spyware. It is a great thread.

And, IMHO Norton Antivirus isn't all that great. There are lots of free AND paid alternatives that I would recommend exploring.

As a former Norton user, here is my suggestion-uninstall your Norton, and then make sure you clean our your registry as well. Norton is bad for burying itself deep into the registry. Also this board will tell you about some free anti-virus programs such as AVG, Bit defender, A squared, etc.

If you need any help, just let me know.

My suggestion would be to get rid of Norton. I had it for a full year for my Windows '98 and had nothing but trouble with it. Every time there was a problem, their solution was to uninstall/reinstall. I let it go a few months ago and now use AVG for anti-virus and ZoneAlarm for a firewall and haven't had a problem since. BTW, these are both freeware.
