Problem with Norton

HI, I'm running Norton antivirus on windows XP, can anyone tell me how to stop norton running a virus check on files I already have in word and excel when I open them. Sorry if this question has already been asked- if so can someone point me to the solution.

I have Norton on my 'puter and was wondering if having Pitstop installed would be a good idea? Would they be doing the same thing?

Just an FYI, it is preferable to start your own "thread" or "post" in the way described above, rather than piggy-backing on another person's post, which can get very confusing to the original poster when they receive advice for a problem that is not identical to their own. Even if it is identical it might be for different reasons, so always best to start your own "thread".
