Problem with Preview Pane in OE

For security purposes, I stopped using the Preview Pane in OE. But now, when I receive an e-mail with an attachment, there is no paper clip to click. There is just the note about the attachment under the subject line. And when I click that, the attachment opens automatically. With the paper clip, when I would click it, I had the option of opening the attachment or saving it. I always would save it so it would go through my anti-virus program. Is this a case of either-or? Or is there a way I can avoid using the preview pane and still be able to save attachments instead of them opening automatically? Thanks.
