I have a computer that has two 256 mb of ram but the system says 504 mb. Does anyone know why or how to fix this?

    Thanks,

    Hmm?

Hi keyser, where are you getting the 504MB from?

    Go to run and type
    And hit enter...

You will see a screen pop up with a list of items, near the bottom where it says "memory" what does it say ther?

What makes you think you have 256MB then?

    Q

Oh, did you do "dxdiag" ... what did it say?

    Hi keyser318,

On some older systems, the computer's bios will allocate some Ram for Video. Thus, when windows boots it displays what is available for use.

    Can I change this?

Long story, but I think it is preventing a video program from running properly. It seems like it has capped the video ram when a computer without that cap runs fine

    Thanks!

Maybe. What is the make and model of your computer?

If you have a system with integrated graphics, the missing 8MB are being used by the graphics chip on your mother board and that is perfectly normal.

So. What is the make and model of your computer?

If you are having problem with video, get a video card. Don't rely on the 8MB that the onboard video chip steals from your system RAM for power.
You could also up the RAM in your computer from 512MB to 1GB. Things just work better with more RAM.

I agree, however, I would have to do it to a bunch of computers and I am not sure that is cost feasible. The interesting part is that the application works with a mobile computer that shows 512MB of RAM. Any thoughts on why?

    Different hardware, different video chip.
