My computer is relatively new (had it built in March) and my drive just won't read cds or dvds anymore. It was working perfectly fine up until today, and now the drive just won't read anything. This problem is beginning to tick me off, and I really don't want to have to buy a new drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

If the drive worked good at first, try cleaning it with cleaning cd's etc.
Try uninstalling the dvd drive and Ide driver in Device manager.
Make sure the Ide ribbon connecting to your drive is not bent or anything.
    Try reformatting your harddrive.
If all does not work it's probaly a defective drive.I have built 3 personal computers and so far the first thing to go on each computer were my dvd/cd drives ,it's bullshit, but dvd drives never last long.

Which Ide driver? There is a whole list of them.

Well I installed a spare cd-rom drive I had around the house and that doesn't work either. It can read the cds but can't install anything from the drive. If I try to install Gothic 2 or Battlefield 2 it stops recognizing the disk midway through. I'm beginning to think that this doesn't have anything to do with my combo drive. Any suggestions?

Are you drives set to master?

My combo drive is set to master and my cd-rom drive is set to slave. This problem with reading cds was happening even before I installed the second drive.

yeah same ribbon and I can't find any firmware updates for either of my drives. I did notice something weird with the way the wired my system. They tied the ide ribbon to the drive bays and it seemed like the ribbon was tied so tight that it was being bent and choked. Last time I opt for "professional wiring."

Problem solved it was as simple as both drives being bad. I replaced them both and everything is up and running smoothly. Thanks for the suggestions.
