Problem with sound card

Awhile back, my speakers seemed to stop working ... there was a terrible static kind of sound coming from them. Dummy me, I assumed it was the speakers and bought new ones.

Well, of course, it wasn't the speakers, because the static sound was still there. I then assumed it was the sound card and bought one from Overstock.com.

When I put the sound card in and installed the software, the speakers seemed to work ... or so I thought.

When the computer boots up, I can hear the "Windows Start" sound, and the speakers work for awhile. However, they stop working after a time. If I am playing any kind of video or a game, the sound stops almost immediately.

I have tried re-installing the software, but to no avail.

    What could the problem be?

    Thanks!

Yes, I had onboard sound. The sound card is Aureal AU8810. I'm running Windows XP. I'm not sure what brand the motherboard is. I can tell you that the processor is an AMD Athlon XP (something like that ... it runs at 1.49GHz).

I saw an entry "Onboard Legacy Audio" ... I disabled that.

There was another entry for "Soundblaster" that was already disabled ... I didn't change that entry.

I also downloaded the driver from the site you gave me.

The sound is still doing the same thing, though. :(
