Problem with SP2

It happened twice.
I downloaded SP2 from microsoft and it installed perfectly.
However, when I restarted my PC I had lost all my USB hubs and was unable to get on internet, use my mouse or my printers.
I uninstalled XP2 and upon restarting everything returned to normal.
What is wrong?
I'd appreciate some help on this as I'd like to re-install SP2.

Get any errors?
Try to update USB drivers, or even rollback usb drivers?
Check device manager see what's up there?

What Kind of PC is this, basic spec's?

thanks for quick response.
I run XpPro on an abit board with a 2.8P4 Prescott in an EZ cool caase.
with 1 gig ram.
I've tried updating my usb drivers but they are fully updated. This is the 2nd time I've had trouble with MS SP2 updating. I tried to do it before from the CD but had to re-format my hard drive as I was unable to re-boot.
Why can't MS get it right at times?
If you've any more ideas I'd be grateful. Downloading SP2 is no big deal as I've broadband but it's a faff!

Further to above, I've cracked it.
I downloaded and installed SP2 again. The same thing happened. I had no USB's nor printers or mouse.
I re-installed my chipset drivers from my abit CD and-hey presto- everything came to life. Two of the USB hubs had to have their drivers re-installed but that did it. Up and running well with SP2.
My board is an Abit 1S7-E. This may help others who may experience the same problem.
