    hey all,

I have an AVerMedia DVB-T TV tuner which I only use to record analog signals (from an old video camera and a VHS player) to my PC. It has always worked perfectly, until a few weeks ago - now, no matter what settings I choose, the audio and video always record out of sync.

I made a series of changes to my system a few weeks ago, one of which must have caused this issue with my TV Tuner recording, as it was working fine just a week before.

Firstly, I installed new DVD drives (Samsung drives which show as "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S222A" in device manager). They came with a new version of Nero which I also installed - either 8 or 9 I think, but I can't say for certain as I uninstalled it and went back to my older version which I preferred, and which didn't hijack my file associations. This version of Nero also prompted me to install the latest DirectX updates, which I did also. I thought I should also check Windows Updates at this point and make sure my system was all up-to-date, and this prompted me to also install the latest version of Explorer.

I've tried uninstalling and then re-installing all the drivers for my TV Tuner, but that hasn't helped the problem at all, and it still records out-of-sync.

    My system is:

    Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3

    Intel[R] Core[TM]2 CPU
    6400 @ 2.13 GHz
    2.13 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM

Any suggestions as to what to try next would be greatly appreciated.

A longshot, but have you checked AverMedia's support page for updated drivers and/or firmware upgrades?

If this doesn't work (and you have access to another PC with a version of Windows the AverMedia drivers/software are supported by), try the device on a second PC. If it still won't work it's possible the hardware itself has failed.

I did look on AverMedia's website for updated drivers, but I actually can't find my model listed there at all. The install discs show it as an AVerTV DVB-T 777, and in Control Panel it shows as AVerMedia DVB-T TV Tuner (A16AR), but I can't seem to see anything that matches this at AVerMedia's website. I bought it around 2007 or so, so it's not ancient...

I don't have access to another PC I'm afraid. For some reason I doubt the hardware is failing though, it's fine when I watch VHS through it - it only looses sync when I try to record. and like I said, it was working perfectly just a week before I made the system changes I mentioned in my original post.

my gut feeling is that is has something to do with the the DirectX updates, but I know very little about them. I see that DirectX 9.0C is also on the install disc for the TV Tuner, so I'm guessing DirectX is in some way important to the device...

If AverMedia has a customer support e-mail or phone #, try contacting them. Most mfr. tech support is marginal at best, so don't be disappointed if you don't initially get a good answer. If calling and the first tech support person can't solve the problem in 10-15 minutes, be polite but firm in asking for the "Level Two" tech support agent (more likely to have better solutions than reading off a checklist ;)).

Although attempting an uninstall of the current version of DirectX may be an option; be warned it may cause problems with other applications. Unless you have an experienced geek guiding you, pass on this for now. Even if you roll it back to 9.0c (the version on the setup CD), it is likely other software may eventually force it to update, bringing back the issues with the TV tuner.

The final possibility (iffy, at best) is to find what looks like a similar AverMedia device on the support web page and try the drivers for it.

If anyone else has experience with this type of issue, please chime in.

thanks... I'm in Australia, and ringing customer service would be very costly, but I've emailed customer support and hopefully they'll respond. Although my hardware wasn't listed in their driver support area on their website, it was listed in their help email form, which is a good sign I guess.

I considered rolling back the DirectX, but I had a feeling this might be unwise for someone with my (limited) knowledge.

thank you for taking the time to respond here!

    Hi

I do not like nero, in fact i detest it, it is to invasive.
I think if i recall correctly Nero killed my virtual Cd/DVd access.
I had no end of issues with nero, i thought it would be fine becuse it came with My dvd, wow was i wrong.

Even if you do a complete uninstall of nero it still leaves files behind.. grrr

It may help to remove nero, using a nero cleaning program, just google for one.. if this was installed around the time of the issue occuring??

As far as the tv tuner goes its all about the Tv tuners "chip" as much as the brand..perhaps everest ( can download from this site ) will id the chip the tuner is using, then google it for your version of windows and service pack #

    good luck

    thanks necro.

I'll try a Nero cleaning program in case that is it. what (free) CD burner do people recommend? I burn mostly audio discs, and like to be able to preview/listen to tracks while in the burning program.

AverMedia customer service was predictably unhelpful. they basically just told me to check that my video card, sound card, and TV tuner drivers were all up to date.
