Problem with using "Find" in Word 2000

Out of the blue in the past week or so, whenever I go to "edit" "Find" the window is defaulting to a style of "Title Page," rather than no formatting at all. Anyone out there have any idea how to fix this? Thanks for any help.

Could be your template has been changed - if it's in new docs, this worked for me awhile back in another version of Word.

Rename the Normal.dot template in Windows 2000

    1. Quit all instances of Word, including Microsoft Outlook if Word is set as your e-mail editor.

    2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.

    3. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Normal.dot.

    4. In the Look in box, select your local hard disk.

    5. Click Search Now to search for the file.

    6. For each occurrence of Normal.dot that appears in the Search Results dialog box, right-click the file, and then click Rename.
-Give the file a new name, such as OldNormal.dot and then press ENTER.

    7. On the File menu, click Close to quit the Search program.

When you restart Word, a new global template (Normal.dot) is created that contains the Word default settings.

Thanks for the suggestion -- that was the first thing I thought of also, and I checked my normal.dot and it did not display style "Title Page" when I tried to use "find." So changing the normal.dot doesn't seem to be the answer.

Look in Tools > Options > Edit toward the bottom Click & Type is it set to Normal? If set to Title that could be the problem.

Nope, it's set to Normal. Good try, though.

Running out of ideas :( Are you using some kind of add-on for Word by any chance?

I don't know what you mean by an "add-on" in Word. This problem just started occurring in the last week or so. I do use another program, Hot Docs, which assembles documents from templates in Word and it does use its own styles, so that might somehow be the source of the problem.

Go to Word's Tools menu and click on Templates and Addins, you will get a dialog box that lists all addins. Simply highlight the addin(s) and click the Remove/Delete button.

If you don't have a bunch of personal settings you could try the steps in the link below, it should reset MS Word back to default settings. That might fix your Find and Replace feature.

This was very helpful because now I understand what add-ins I do have. Unfortunately, I cannot delete those add-ins because I need them. However, I'm going to go to My Computer, search for all those template files, open up each one, and see if I can fix the problem that way.

Try this, go to Start > Run > and type winword.exe /a

This should launch Word without any addins, try your Find and Replace feature and see if it does like before.

I just ran winword.exe /a and it does not repeat the problem.

I would think it might be an "addin" causing the changes then, as Cat suggested.

    Thanks Steve,

You might check to see if there is an update to your add-on to fix the issue, sometimes there is a patch.

Going with Cat's afterthought .... If there isn't a patch, report the problem to the add-in creator so a patch can be developed and provided.
