    Hello,

I keep occasionally getting my machine completely locking up. It was working fine until about 3 months ago when I replaced my video card.

    My set-up is
    Windows Xp home SP3
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 Retail AM2 processor
    Asrock ALiveSATA2-GLAN Motherboard
Used to have Albatron GeForce 7950GT 512MB PCI-E
    now I have a Asus GeForce GT 440 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
    3.20GB of Ram which is 2 times Corsair 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300C5 667MH

After it crashes I always get the advice from microsoft.

Address a problem with your video device driver

You received this message because a hardware device in your computer caused Windows to shut down unexpectedly and restart. This is a serious problem, commonly referred to as a "stop error" or "blue screen."

There are two things you can try to solve the problem. If the first option doesn't work, then try the second.

Install the most current device driver for your video card

Manually decrease Hardware Acceleration for your video adapter

I have gone to the asus website and downloaded the latest video driver. At the moment I play two games (LOTRO and Civ 5) with verying degress of success. Lotro starts fine but occasionally the graphics fall over after I have played for a while. While Civ 5 only starts successfully about 20% of the time the rest of the time my machien freezers and eventually goes to a blue screen which mentions about an infinite loop. But when it starts successfully it works fine.
I have tried to switch off the hardware acceleeration but then no games work as there is no device.
The only other thing to note is the first time I boot my machine the fans are a lot noisier for the first 5 minutes but after that they are the noise goes to a normal hum of the fans.

    Cheers

One other thought I have had since previous post is that did you completely uninstall the old Card Driver.. as if not this could cause your problem.

I just resolved this problem on my video card (Asus GT 440). The issue was related to the card overheating. I found out that this card has the fan set to "auto-detect" when it needs to speed up, based off of the heat. Well, for whatever reason it wasn't doing that. I installed some software Asus provided for it's cards called Asus SmartDoctor, and was able to tweak the fan to full power. Once I did that, I haven't had that issue again.
