My computer is a Dell, 1.5 GHz processor w/ 512 Mb of RAM and a 60 Gb hard drive & Windows Me.

When trying to do a windows.update with ie6 version.0.2800.1106CO it won't work. After I click "Install Now" the download box pops up but just sits there and does nothing. Then when I click Cancel, another box pops up with the following error message:

Explorer has caused an error in RPCRT4.DLL.
    Explorer will \ow close.

If you continue to experience problems,
    try restarting your computer.

I keep getting the same error after multiple restarts. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Thanks. I just tried cleaning out a crapload of old cookies and I'm still having the exact same problem.

  4. Well maybe try reinstalling internet explorer. It might help you a little bit.

    Tried that also, no luck.

  6. Try sfc /scannow which will take off all hotfixes but strip your internet explorer back to its original state and from there you can try to update with the original browser and if that works you can install the latest ie from M$ and try it then.
    lemme know if this helps
    -the new tech guy
P.S.: to do scannow go to start run and type "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) and the process should begin and it will also scan for file problems in your system. But stand by it and have your windows cd ready because most likely it will ask for that disc. hope this helps

Thanks again. Before I do it, what are hotfixes? And will running that sfc /scannow thing change or harm any other programs?

  8. Hotfixes are windows updates and no it will not mess up any other programs or settings. Because the affects mainly pretain to windows like system stuff.

  9. im a corpral now go me  !

Now when I try to do the sfc /scannow thing, I get a box with the following error message:

Windows cannot find 'sfc.' You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

    Another problem:

When running ie6, when I click on "Edit", then "Find (On this page)...Ctrl+F", I get a box that says:

An error has occured in this dialog.

    Error 35.
Incompatible version of the RPC stub.

I've already tried re-installing ie6 with no luck. Any Ideas? Thanks !

  12. hmm... are you typing it in correctly? Here copy and paste this into your run box without the quotes "sfc /scannow" just highlight everything in the quotes without getting the quotes and press cntrl+c on your keyboard which will copy it. Then open the run box and hit cnrtl+v (no plus, im just useing the + to signal a button combonation like cntrl+alt+del) into the box with a blinking cursor to paste it and do not use anything while doing this as it slows down your computer during the scan and it can take a little while.
    lemme know if this helps

Aaaaand here's another ie6 problem I wanted to mention if I may. Whenever I'm surfing the net, if I click on a link that opens in a new window, the new window opens but does not load the web page. The new window churns away indefinitely without ever showing the web page. But then if I click Stop and then Click Refresh, it works fine.

Man does ie6 have issues or what??

  14. JohnnyGalaga

    JohnnyGalaga Private First Class

That's exactly how I did it the first time, with the Ctrl+v thing. I've tried it several more times and still no luck.

The SFC command is not available in Windows ME.

  16. Yup your ie is definitely corrupt do the sfc /scannow and copy and install ie again. I see shadow puter dude is also here so he should give me a hand if im being unclear. Thanks in advance. Anyway, try the sfc to strip ie back to the original setup it was in and run it lemme know if this helps.

  17. Wait i thought he said he was useing winxp. my mistake

  18. Well shadow do you think a repair would help him unless there is a way for hime to take off internet explorer and put it back on all together. But the repair is another pain in the neck in itself. If there is a way or if Johnny sees another way he can point it out.

I have re-installed that version of ie6 a couple times but still no luck. I didn't uninstall ie6 first though. I don't know how it uninstall it first.

  24. Well then im not sure what exactly you would want to do next. A repair possibly? I think shadow may know the next course of action scince he knows more than i. I not trying to dump anything on nobody but i just dont know what the next course of action should be.

Here's another wierd thing. When I try going to the new Microsoft windows update website at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us my ie6 gives me the following message:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.

Meanwhile I'm looking at the version by clicking Help, then About Internet Explorer, and it shows version 6.0.2800.1106CO. Yikes! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

What OS are you using? I heard ME. So, if you are using windows ME, then you can't use the new V6 of windows update. You have to use v4.

What exact error code do you get when you attempt to use windows update?

    Also, do you have Mcafee?

  31. JohnnyGalaga

    JohnnyGalaga Private First Class

See my very first post. There's also a couple other ie6 problems I'm having that I listed in this thread.

    Errgh! :)

Do have any firewalls installed? Mcafee? Norton?

I've also gone to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, then scrolled down to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools and then clicked on Add/Remove. Then I get a box with 3 choices:

    Add a Component
    Repair Internet Explorer
    Restore the previous Windows configuration

I have done the repair option & rebooted twice and am still having all the same problems. There is no option to completely remove ie altogether. When I do the Restore the previous Windows configuration choice, all it does is restore ie back to my older version 5.5 that I used to have AND I still have all the same problems.

Pretty soon I'm just gonna say screw it all and go with FireFox.

I have AVG Free and ZoneAlarm

Just something to try, have you tried disabling ZoneAlarm, and trying the windows update?

Thanks for the idea. I just tried it but still no luck. Does anyone know how to completely uninstall ie and all its related files?

Thanks. I spent a couple hours doing all that and it was worthwhile because it cleaned a lot of stuff including about 3-4 viruses! Unfortunately ie6 is still sucking wind because it's still having all the same retarded issues. I just about give up at this point. Thank goodness for Firefox.

What I wonder is why didn't my computer do all these stupid things when I first got it 5 years ago. How come computers work okay when they're new, but then after a while they start having all kinds of quirky little issues?

And I've got other problems too, like my Date/Time Properties not letting me adjust the time because the stupid up/down buttons under the clock thingy are greyed out.

    When does it end?

  40. Tourangh

    Tourangh Master Sergeant

when you wipe your hardrive :( . You could get help in the spyware specific to make sure there isnt anymore stuff. I ended up wiping mine after backing up a few things since it was so screwed up. But that is only the last resort.

  41. Well do you wanna try to do a windows repair (im not sure if thats availible in winme but if it is it might help. Could someone veify for me if the windows repair option is availible for me? I would check but I dont have that operateing system :(. If it is i will post instructions on how to do it. Might be a good idea because if those viruses are gone they may have corrupted windows files which may cause a problem either now or later down the road. But if anyone knows wether it is possible in winme please let me know

    I Fixed The Problem!!

    I FIXED THE PROBLEM !! I FIXED ALL THREE PROBLEMS !!!! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
    YEAH BABY !!!!!!

Here's what I found out on Google:

    http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/35.html

Scroll down to where it says
How To: Fix "Error 35: Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub."

I replaced the file exactly like it said, rebooted, and VOILA !! Now ie6 works PERFECTLY. Then I did a Windows Update without a hitch, the Find feature now works properly, and web sites that open in a new window now load properly. YES !! VICTORY !!! HOW SWEET IT IS, BROTHER !!!! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

    I WIN !! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

I had to reboot into pure DOS mode in order to copy the file. It pays to know those old DOS commands. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Here was a thread I found explaining what version of that file I needed:

    http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/166255.html

Then I downloaded the file from here:

    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?oleaut32

Then I rebooted into pure DOS with a boot disk, copied the file, rebooted into Windows, and now everything is working again.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT, DAWG!!

Also, I think I know what caused the problem at first, and it was my fault.

I attempteed to install Service Pack 2 which I didn't know was only for Windows XP, but I have Windows ME. The install never finished, but I think it got far enough to upgrade my oleaut32.dll file to a newer version which is what screwed everything up.

Replacing that file with the older version is what fixed all my issues.

  48. Glad to hear you straightened out the problem on your own. Happy surfing.
