Ok, so I am at the User Accounts Window (which can be accessed through the Control Panel) when I try to pick a task. specifically "Change the way users log on or off" I get an error reading "A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed." And that's it, it doesn't give which exact DLL failed or anything.

If somone could help me out on a solution to this or just begin to point me at the right direction, anything short of re-imaging the system, it would be great.

    Thanks!

I would think that particular dll needs to be re-registered, but without knowing which dll it is it's tough to try to guess which one.

I'll send Adrynalyne a PM and see if he knows.

I don't know specifically, but I do know what can affect this particular area.

Do you use netware, or have any novell clients installed in your network stack?

Do you use pc anywhere, or any other remote access software?

I'm guessing that maybe one of those type of applications is failing, causing this to fail as well.

Try running an sfc /scannow, froma command prompt (cmd.exe).

nope..no netware...no novell clients..and i do not allow remote access.

    Thanks :)

Not allowing remote access is not the same thing I'm asking about though.

Yea did that twice no change :(

It really sucks that it doesn't tell me exactly which DLL is messing up :(

Try this. Go to the microsoft website and do a repair on your windows. It will search for files that are needed are not there, or files that are there that are corrupt. I just learned of this place a couple days ago and it really helps! You can also run the repair from a windows xp cd, just pop it in and it should give an option to do so (i should tell my dad this before he keeps reformating every 5 days).

Not to be too skeptical, but how about a link?

ths problem is that there is only one acct. And even if i start with the admin acct. on safe mode the same thing happens

I don't have it right now, just do a search on the microsoft website for "repair xp" and it should bring up something.

It brings up plenty, but not an MS online repair site. Repairing XP is well documented, and involves using the XP CD or the installation files from the CD on the HDD. I am skeptical that MS would go to the trouble to duplicate something online that can easily be accomplished with the original media. If you're going to recommend an online repair tool, please provide a link to said tool.

Do you know what the side effects of a repair install are?

    1. Restore points are lost.
    2. Registry damage becomes permanent when the current hives are put in the %systemroot%\repair directory.
    3. Driver updates are lost. Devices that do not have in box drivers may need to be reinstalled.
    4. Post SP2 release, any application requiring Windows Installer 3.0 may be broken after a repair install.

Always consider the risks as well as the advantages :)

An sfc /scannow is much safer.

    Has that been tried?

I really don't know what I should be looking for in the eventviewer. Nothing comes up as a (!)
