    Hi Geeks,
I have a inbuilt wireless card. when i try to connect to the d-link router through my wireless card it shows that i got connected and the signal strength is excellent. But when i look at the status i can see packets being sent and packets received are 0, and i am unable to browse anything I have other laptops in my house which can connect fine with wireless connection.
When i connect to router using lan wire i can connect properly and browse. This is the same problem which i am facing in the two operating which i run on my laptop.

I can see my IP adress and can ping it. but when i try to ping other connected systems in my house i am unable to ping.

I am attaching a log file for the help

    My configuration:
Operating systems: win2000 server/ win xp professional
wireless lan card: Intel pro/wireless lan 2100 3A mini pci adapter
    SSid: default.

Do you know anything about wireless security?? If not ask for this to be cleared up some more!!

Anyway...check to see if their is a WEP key that needs to be added, changed or removed!!

    Hi Roger,
Actually i dont have much idea on wireless security. If u can provide me some info on that it would be great. As far as i know, our wireless network is not protected and i connected to my wireless network using many other systems. Actually i formatted my system from windows xp home to win xp professional. Before the formatting i used to connect properly. Only after formatting i am facing this problem.

Thank you very much in advance for ur help

i used to get this all the time i know it seems simple but have you tried leaving all the computers off and the d-link and the internet modem? thats what I always did and it worked fine, good luck to ya!

Try entering the IP address of your gateway manually into XP.

In addition, have you got the correct SSID on the client pc. To check this open the wireless card's utility and check. One of the tabs will say something like connected to SSID: xxxxxx. If you do not know your ssid make sure 'ANY' is selected.

You may also have security protocols in place ie WEP or WPA which can obstruct initial contact so you should really turn them off in the first instance until you can make contact with your wireless card.

    Good Luck

    Just thought of something...try this

goto, Start > Connect to > Show all connections....then right click on your wireless connection icon, then in that drop down menu...click on properties.

Now...up at the top of the new window that just popped up...is there a tab that says "Wireless Connections" or "Wireless" something??

Let me know what you find, and we will go from there!!

    Hi Roger,
Ok when i go to the properties the three tabs are General, Wireless networks and Advanced.
When i go to wireless network widows to configure my wireless networks is selected, and in the prefeered netorks my default connection is set to automatic and has been activated.
when i go to the properties of this connection I have three tabs,
    association, authentication and conection.
In association i have Network Name SSID: default and grayed out.
    wireless network key values:
    Network authentication: open
    Data encryption: Disabled
    In authentication tab:
nothing is there every thing grayed out.
In connectin tab: connect when this network is available is selected.

Thats the max info i could provide u.
    Thanks for ur help.

Do you know how to get into your router??

If so...check and see what the SSID is!! Then go into your wireless networking and where it says the SSID is default...enter in EXACTLY what it says the SSID is in your router!!

While you are in the router configuration tool...check and see if any kind of security (encryption) is enabled...if so...it will probably be WEP or WPA...then if one of those is enabled in the router...it has to be enabled in your wireless connections utility!!

Let me know what you come up with!!

Me and the wife are possibly going out this evening but I will keep a close watch for you until about 5pm...otherwise it might be later on before I get back!! By the Way...it is currently 2:45pm here...just incase our times are different!!

    hI ROGER,
Thanks for ur time and help. I dont remember setting any user name and password for my router. But now when i wanted to check it is not allowing me to enter . I have checked other systems in my room, for that systems the settings are the same. there is no SSID and no encryption is set.

    thanks

Try "admin" or "administrator" (without quotes) for the username...and then try "password" (without quotes) for your password!! If that gets you in then note what the following settings are...keep in mind that it isn't going to be worded exactly the same, but should be similar!!

    1) SSID
    2) network key values:
    3) Data encryption:

Otherwise if you still can't get in...

If you didn't change any settings when you set up your router...then try D-Link for your SSID!! You might have to do it in all lowercase, or maybe just like I typed it, or maybe with a capital D and lower L, maybe no dash...I can't remember exactly how d-link does it!!

You might try looking in your router manual...it will probably tell you what your default SSID would be!! Whatever it is...it has to be EXACTLY the same on all systems and the router!!

Another thing...If you can connect and you the other wireless computers...check the wireless connection settings on one of those...and see if the troublesome computer matches those...IDENTICALLY!!!!

Let me know what you come up with!!!!

Hi roger, icould not connect to router but i checked other systems. There settings are exactly same with out a single difference. no network ssid, network authentication open and encryption is disabled.
Roger is there any chance of using the wrong software.
    just my htought.

    Thanks.

Are you using the built in "Windows wireless configure utility" ??

Do you know if the wireless utility for the built in wireless has been installed?? Did you buy the computer new with all the stuff already on it!!

See if you can find an option in the windows wireless utility that you can check to tell windows to let the other wireless utility to handle the configurations!! If so...check it so that the windows one will let the other take over!!

I would give you better details...but I don't have wireless on this system si I can see how to tell you exactly what i'm saying, and my other system that has wireless isn't here with me at the time!!

Let me know what you find!!

Me and the wife are going to go look at a possible new car, so I will try to get back to you as soon aas I can!!!!

    Talk at you later!!

sportsman, just a tought here but have you disabled XP's 'zero wireless configuration' (ZWC) in Services.

Sometimes a wireless card's software driver will compete with XP ZWC and cancel each other out. They cannot seem to co-exist and one or the other has to be disabled. I generally always disable ZWC.

Your glitch is something simple, which we are all overlooking as you say.

One other thing you could do is reboot your gateway by way of a power cycle. Make sure all your pcs are off first.

Let us know how you get on.

    Good Luck

EDIT: rogvalcox, sorry posted just after you. Did not mean to in part cover the same ground

What brand is the built in wireless in your laptop?? Whatever it is...do you see anything in the start > all programs that refers to that...if so click it and see if it opens anything new in your sytem tray (down by the clock)...that will be the configuration tool (software) that came with the built in wireless!! If, when you find it and you click on it, and it does open into your system tray...then double click on that new little icon that would have just popped up down by the clock, and that will open up the configuration tool that might be fighting with the windows config tool (the one you've been using)!!

If you accomplish what I'm talking about...and the settings are different, and the tool individual configuration tools have been fighting one another...that could explain your problem!!! So make sure all the settings are JUST LIKE the ones in the other wireless comps that work!! Keep in mind that you will have to use a little imagination, because windows, and all the different brands of wireless utilities aren't going to word all the setting options exactly the same!!

If you have any doubts or troubles...or if I've managed to confuse the hell out of ya...then let me know what you've come up with so far...and we'll go from there, tomorrow!!

In the meantime...over-n-out...got up too early so I'm officially going to be now!!

    Roger

P.S. We are looking to get a another new ford explorer, but the one she liked at the lot we went to tonite...they wouldn't budge on it, so I don't guess they really wanted to sell it too bad!! Oh well...tomorrow's another day..there's bound to be one out there somewhere that will work for us!!!!

Thanks Roger for ur help. Now i dont know what happened after following all the steps u suggested i resarted the systems and now i am able to connect to internet with my wireless network. But one more problem, with wireless connection the network is too slow. For eg: if i get to the site majorgeeks.com this page opens very quickly, but when i try to get into forumsupport it is taking long time, very long time actually. this is happening with all most all the sites. why do u think so?
But when connected with wired lan connection is very fast.

    Thanks for the help.

sportsman, I take it that you followed rogvalcox's instructions and that you opened the wireless card's own utility (having disabled ZWC).

The card's utility will show the signal strength. Signal strength on wireless cards will determine its speed ie if you have a 10% signal you will surf the net slowly, 90% will approach your wired connection.

This is how I understand it and that is how the wireless signal works on my setup.

I have no experience of built in wireless cards but the antenna and more importantly it's 'db' (ability to send & receive) could be an issue.

I guess at the end of the day you could always replace the onboard wireless card by way of buying a PCMCIA card which would slot into your laptop(s).

At least you have overcome your connection isssue, which I guess must have been due to ZWC having been on.

    Good Luck

EDIT: one other thing that can slow down a wireless connection is a too complex wireless encryption key......

EDIT2: Have you tried running an online connection speed test....

It sounds like risk reversal said...you unknowingly disabled the windows wireless config tool, which in turn let the manufacturers tool take over, without fighting with windows!!

As far as the signal strength goes....are you a long way from the router?? There should be a setting in the config tool that you set to tell it how much of the signal for that specific antenna to hog up!! If you can find it...make sure it is set to 100%!! Another thing to keep in mind...if any other computer is connected to the router, wireless or not...you have to share the signal with everyone connected to the router!!

well i think what roger explained has happened. My signal strength is 100% i am very near probably 1 meter from my wireless router. this one is a 802.11b standard wireless card. Though i can connect using wireless as it is very slow i am still connected using wired lan.
I hope even this one will be solved suddenly. Thanks all for ur help guys.

sportsman, the fact that you are using the 'b' standard should not be an issue. I run a Netgear DG824M with MA311 wireless cards which are 'b' also. My wireless connection is just as fast as if hard wired.

There must be something else obstructing your wireless card.

If you have a friend who could lend you a pcmcia card, it would be worth a try to see if a dedicated wireless card worked better than the onboard one..

    Good luck

Thanks risk_reversal, the option of pcmcia card worked better. But i am checking whats the problem with my existing onboard wireless card.

    thanks very much
