I have a problem with the free edition of Zone-Alarm firewall where it will sort of fail and tell me I need to reboot the PC. I am sure that it isn't a malware issue, I have performed 2 different online scans and 3 different local scans with no results.

Has anybody eles had this problem? And if I cannot fix it, then is there a similar firewall that I can use?

Since you are not getting any replies, you might want to go to ZA's website and perhaps you can get some help there.

Just some simple Q? do you have more then 1 firewall in your computer and also do you have norton installed in your system?

I find if i have more then one firewall in my computer some time they clash and do crazy things sometimes.

Also i have found on my computers that depending on the way you install the programs can make there own problems like having other firewalls on when trying to install another on the same system and also find that norton and ZA do not really like each other on the same system.

If you do have norton and want to install ZA turn norton off and any other programs that run in the background before trying to install.

also have a look at your windows fire wall turn it off when install ZA and then turn on the windows firewall after you have reboted your system.

    Hope this helps

I used to use Norton, but I uninstalled it just before I installed ZA, and unfortunately I have woken up to find the problem still exists :(

When you had norton in your system and you uninstalled it, did you do a full shut down and restart from the case button so windows could save all the new settings?

Or did you uninstall norton and then install ZA without a restart?

Also have you tryed to turning off windows firewall?

Another thing i would try is to go into ZA settings and turn off auto start at startup to give the system a chance to load all the files right then , then start up ZA manually.

If this dose not work uninstall ZA shut down then restart after windows boots up go to your Hard drive and them right click on the HDD and go down to properties this should bring up a window called: local disk (C) properties.

In that window should be a set of tags on the top go to the tag called (Tools) in there you will see (Error-cheacking) click on the tag (check now) tick both tags when the option comes upit will do a scan over the c drive and then restart if a blue screen come up with writeing after restart do not panic as it is making doing another scan then windows should boot. Note this might take a while to do depending on Hdd size or computer power.

If all gone well reinstall ZA then shut down system and restart windows to see if this has fixed the problem and ZA should boot.

Good luck hope this fixers your problem if not there some more things you can try out.

one simple rule..... 1 firewall 1 antivirus installed at the same time. more than one and they will conflict with each other. alot of people on here will tell you that norton is a system hog and will slow you pc down to a crawl. i pearsonally got rid of norton ages ago... ZA has it' own forum http://forums.zonelabs.com/ check it out if you need more help with it.

When you say "sort of fail" are you given any error messages, if so what?

Which windows version are you using and if its XP, do you get any errors listed in Adminstrative Tools > Event logs > Software at the time of the ZA crash?

I'll try some things mentioned and see if they work.
