Problems installing MS Office on Windows 7

I bought a new laptop that was installed with Office 2007 Home and Student trial version. I have uninstalled that and tried to install the Office 2007 Enterprise that I have license to and that didn't work. I then purchased the Office 2010 Professional Plus through the "Home Use Program". They sent me downloads and I tried those and I'm getting the same problem.

I have searched and tried all kinds of fixes that I have found: I loaded the MS removal tools to uninstall the previous version, renamed Microsoft Help directory, fixed ownership on the directories and registry keys, tried in safe mode and clean mode. I'm really frustrated and hope I can get some help.

    DETAILS:
    Windows 7
    Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus
Error occurs after the Product License is entered and fairly quickly after the Install button picked, it appears to show start to show progress on the status and then shows the error.

    Error on screen:
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 encountered an error during setup.

In the Event Log under event id 1033 says:
Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Microsoft Office Shared MUI (English) 2010. Product Version: 14.0.4763.1000. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Installation success or error status: 1603.

I don't know if maybe the uninstall of the trial version didn't all work and it's bumping into that, but I'm so frustrated right now and I'm worried I'll mess up things overall.

Any assistance will be sooo appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Donna

Installation of Office can fail if you don't have the required .NET Framework installed. Go to Windows/Microsoft update and check for updates to be sure you have all the .NET Framework versions installed.

I checked the updates and the only optional update left to do is for Silverlight and as far as I can tell, that's for something for Bing. It failed to update that, but I don't think that's related to what you are recommending.

Thanks for responding, hopefully there's other stuff to check as well!

Plodr, I had gone through those instructions and used the "fixit" program they had supplied. I didn't do the "do it yourself" because they didn't have Windows 7 instructions and I'm not familiar enough with Windows 7 to know what to change. So, I decided to plow through it and use the Vista instructions, which seemed to be pretty close. I did have registry keys that I cleaned out and a couple of folders, but alas after a reboot, it still did not work.

    Any additional suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Donna

Well, I was able to get a hold of Microsoft and after they went through everything, they had determined that my installer wasn't working and I would have to recover Windows 7. So, I backed up my files and re-installed back to factory settings. Which, of course, reinstalled the Office 2007 Home and Student, so I uninstalled 2007 and installed Office 2010 and it was successful! Now, I just have to reinstall everything else and re-set up the computer. Oh Bother!

    Thanks for your assistance,
    Donna
