Problems installing some 32bit apps in Win7

I'm having a problem installing MS office 2K and the latest AVG free version on a new build on a win7 system. The computer is all new with a core i5 CPU on an Asus motherboard.

I get the message "error opening installation log file" and the install stops. I know Office 2k can run under win7 since this is not my first time installing it. AVG should install as I've put it on all my Win7 computers.

The only thing that seemed useful was an article on the MS knowledge base about making a setup.ini file with some environment variables in it. I tried that and there was no change. I've also tried running it as administrator with the same results.

I'm not very familiar with win7 and I don't have a clue what to do next. I built this machine for a friend for his medial office and he's expecting it soon and I'm over my head. Any suggestions?

If this machine is for a medical office, why not buy a newer version of MS Office? Is that really not possible?

MS support for Office 2K ended quite a long time ago. A search on install microsoft office 2000 windows 7 revealed many reports of problems installing Office 2K on Windows 7.
